The incident I’m about to tell you is when I judged someone’s level of play because he wasn't well know. There is one NBA rookie that had gotten drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017, His name is Kyle Kuzma. Kyle was picked 27th out of 30. No one knew who Kyle was , nor did they think he would be successful in the NBA. But, when the summer league came around Kyle Kuzma shocked the whole world by averaging 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.…
Due to the practice of trying to make every child feel like a winner in sporting events, Roxanne Jones (former vice president at ESPN) wrote “Listen kids, not everyone is a winner.” She wrote this to hopes to convince parents that making children play sports this way will do more harm than good. Kids need to learn how to lose, and this is why she refused to sign up her son for sports where this ideology is enforced. To appeal to the emotion of the reader she writes in a tone that very clearly shows her distaste for this type of attitude in children’s sports. Jones build credibility in this argument by quoting two professional athletes, James Harrison and John Smoltz.…
“First place for the free throw hoop shoot for ages 8-9 is... Amaya Hamilton!” Hearing the president of the Elks hoop shoot call my name for first place in the regionals was very surprising. This means that I am going to state for the free throw shooting competition in Midland, Michigan. Before making it to the regionals, I got first place at districts.…
Have you ever made your first half court shot? I know I have! It was any other basketball practice, oh wait it was the last basketball practice of the school year/season! The whole team was there.…
Almost every inning, we got the max point we could. We were ahead by the last inning and they were down seven points. Unfortunately when the fifth inning hit, they could get as many points as they could. Westwood came back, but we fought back hard. At the end of the game we tied.…
The suspense in the gymnasium was palpable as I slowly stepped up to the free throw line with zero seconds remaining on the clock. At this point, all eyes were on me. Confidence is a big aspect in my life that I’ve always lacked. Maybe it is because I am a middle child, maybe it is because I am scared of failure, or maybe it is because I am not good under pressure, however, with everyone staring down at me as I stood on the line that day, has most definitely altered me. Formerly, my confidence was as low as fog, but as a result my confidence level has skyrocketed.…
It was on a cool spring night in the middle of May. I was running on a field next to 11 of my teammates and 12 opponents. We were losing the lacrosse game by two points and we had four minutes left in the game. I instinctively made a choice that looked bad on the outside but ultimately… was still a bad choice. It was around 8 o’clock on a thursday night, our girls lacrosse team was playing a normal regulation game against the dreaded high school team from Hempfield.…
Discuss a leadership experience you have had in any area of your life: school, work, athletics, family, church, community, etc. How and why did you become a leader in this area? How did this experience influence your goals? I was playing soccer with my friends in my neighborhood just a normal day everything looked as usual. But while I was playing soccer I was hearing a noise, not knowing if I am the only one who is hearing I felt deluded for a moment and stopped playing soccer and headed to the direction where the noise was coming from.…
“Dang, this asian can really play.” “Even if this guy had slanted eyes he can still see though.” “Man, I shouldn’t have underestimated this kid.” It all started in Middle School, the 8th grade. Co-ed Tennis was available to try-out, so I decided to sign-up because I looked up to my older brother in which he plays Junior Varsity at the EKHS.…
Do you ever think about the sport you’re really good at, and like doing, then get injured so you couldn’t do it anymore? Neither did I until it happened before wrestling practice as we were warming up when I broke my collarbone. This all started the day after Thanksgiving at wrestling practice. We were warming up playing basketball and if someone didn’t make it you had to start sprinting for the ball.…
Playing soccer had always come naturally to me. Since I had played since the young age of seven, I had gained a level of confidence and calmness while playing the fast paced game. I seldom stressed about playing time. Instead, I counted on my natural speed and talent to impress my coaches. At the age of seventeen, I made a decision to try out for a new team.…
8th Grade Basketball It was a very hot day. The blacktop was scorched with heat as my feet started to burn because it was so hot. Ms. Sandoval wanted me and another person to pick the last two names out of the hat. He was on the team too.…
One of the most important preparations is an athlete’s confidence. Self-confidence is “belief in one’s powers and a state of assurance exuded by every great athlete, such as Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Roger Clemens, Wayne Gretzky, Nadia Comaneci, and Serena Williams” (Leith, 2008, p. 18). These great athletes all believe in their skills and abilities, which is considered a good thing in competitive sports. Confidence, many times, is the difference between being a good athlete or the best athlete, the difference between failure and…
Playing field hockey is my passion and an activity that I love to do. I will always love the sport and it will always be a part of who I am. I like to do many things that involve that sport of field hockey. For example, I like to do summer camps, winter clubs, play for my school team in the fall, and do tournaments with my club team in the spring. Speaking of playing field hockey all the time I am currently playing for my indoor club for the third year in a row.…
Before I was even born it seemed it was in my destiny to be a basketball player. My mom won a high school state championship and was some kind of legend in town. When she first signed me up to play in our town rec league, all of the men who ran the league couldn’t believe she didn’t sign up to coach. One of the guys at the table then turned to me and told me he was there when my mom scored the winning basket at the Boston Garden to take the team to the state championship game.…
