Being Judged In High School

Growing up in a community that was mostly black people and Hispanics and really didn’t leave much so I didn’t know that different races were being judged. I work with talking to the people the used language that was not okay to tell other people and became more mindful of what I say, when though I have much to learn and have made mistakes of saying things that can be offensive to other races and cultures. Something that I would do differently in this type of situation would be to talk to my classmates and educated them a little about people that do not look like you, that we are all different but that is actually a good

Label Us Angry by Jeremiah Torres shows how difficult it is for oppressed people to breakout of the path or stereotype that society has created for them. Carlos and Jeremiah have very different triggers and coping mechanisms; any one decision can affect a person’s whole life. When we are taken in by a label, we are taken in by opinions and others’ beliefs. Labels categorize, are designed to make you feel like an outsider, become verbal abuse, narrow our perception of someone. Using any word as a label blinds a person’s true identity.…

However, there ended up being nothing to defend and over time my friend drifted most likely out of fear of the unknown I suppose that in a situation like that…

It is interesting that many of these things still happen today, we see many people who fear other races and judge people based on their race. One would think that today people would understand that there are other races and cultures other than their own, but there are still people who think that their race is superior and constantly judge people by their race and culture. In closing, Leslie Marmon Silko presents trust toward other races, prejudices against certain races, and how certain people feel when others speak a language other than English to show the relationships between Native Americans, Mexicans, and whites in her story “Yellow…

Mexicans always viewed me as a brat who doesn’t know anything about being Mexican. I’ve always hated when Caucasians put me in the category of “chola” or “uneducated” and automatically think of me as a bad person when I tell them I’m Mexican because there is more to me than that. I could never fit in because like Pat Mora said in the poem “Illegal Alien” I was “too Mexican for the Americans and too American for the Mexicans.” (Mora, 40) Growing up, I was a happy, talkative, and social child. I loved being friendly and talking…

“Don’t worry Erik, we’ll always have each other,” I would tell my brother as we ate lunch by ourselves under the playscape of the elementary school playground. Growing up as the only two Hispanic children in the small town of Arco, Idaho, I found out very quickly that other children could be the cruelest and most judgmental individuals when it came to the subject of race. Comments like “Why are you here?” and “No one here likes you! ” seemed to summarize my entire existence.…

I am also the youngest of four so I also was not able to see why parents when they were younger and just being in America. I personally did not see a difference in races being born and raised in Dallas Texas, in a little town called Farmers Branch we were mostly populated with Mexican American with a smaller population of Whites, Blacks, and Asian. Imagine starting a new school, in a new state, maybe even a new country. On the first day of class looking around, seeing you 're the only one whose skin color is not white, you’re the only one with dark curly hair, and you 're the only one who “doesn’t belong.” Upon entering the classroom you hear comments like “It 's a Mexican”, “Do you even speak English?”, “How did you cross the border?” That 's what students like Natalia Martinez, Genesis Garcia, Kendrick Rosado, and I had to deal with when starting a new school. Students have taken it upon themselves to decide where someone is from and how they got here.…

There are many times where I felt isolated for not being Latina enough. Many times it is for something so simple, but we tend to judge the people within our culture the toughest. Growing up, I was always made fun of for my Spanish by my family. I would say a sentence incorrectly, or because my accent sounded “too white.” One of the reasons behind embracing my white identity over my Hispanic identity was because I felt like I didn’t meet the criteria to be fully Hispanic.…
