Charlie Sheen reveals his HIV status
Celebrity Charlie Sheen last year while being interviewed at TODAY by Matt Lauer announced that he was HIV-positive. He revealed that he had been diagnosed with HIV for over four years earlier. The former Two and a Half Men actor said that he had bribed extortionists with about ten million dollars to keep his HIV status a secret. The announcement from Charlie Sheen brought about a revelation about HIV. His decision has increased people awareness about HIV. A virus contributes to HIV infections in humans and it affects the immune system and weakens it in such a way that the body cannot fight other diseases. If not well managed the virus leads to a progressive failure in of the immune system. It can be life threatening if no well managed since it allows opportunistic infections to thrive in the human body. The average survival time for a person infected with the HIV without treatment is between nine to eleven years. A person can be infected through various ways. Infection can occur if one gets into contact with infected bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids, blood, breast milk and anal fluids. The most common method of infection is the sexual transmission. Sheens disclosure brought focus on the dangers of having unsafe sexual practices. Sexual transmission being the leading method of infection, the announcement by Charlie Sheen brought into focus the dangers of casual living (Lanford 12). After the announcement Charlie revealed that he hoped that he would inspire some change. He announced that he had accepted his condition and not as a curse but as an opportunity to help other people. Since his diagnosis with HIV, he has not passed the virus to anyone knowingly because he informs them of his status before engaging in any form of sexual encounter (Blazkova, Boughorbel, Presnell, Quinn, and Chaussabel 12). Sheen has had an unsafe sexual encounter with two people since he knew his status but had told them that he was HIV positive. His revelation also showed the importance of getting tested for the HIV.
