But I mean to talk about the people who have felt unwelcomed, the people who were ignored in their pain, those taken advantage of by church leaders and members, some who even felt attacked by the congregation for their choices, and the people who have sat in the pews hearing sermons about how the church is supposed to be a “hospital for the broken and sinner” while people ignore you because your brokenness it too much. These stories are way too common today and I want to say once and for all:

The Nelsens’ model which is said to be closer to the Black Church may be called the “dialectic model” of the Black Church. Black Churches are institutions that are involved in a consent series of dialectic tensions. The dialectic holds opposites in tension, constantly shifting between the polarities in historical time. There is no Hegelian synthesis or ultimate resolution of the dialectic. The task of the social analyst is to examine the social conditions of any black church, including the situation of its leadership and membership, to determine what its major orientation is in relation to any pair of dialectical polarities.…

What my husband's advancement to Chief Petty Officer means to me? The answer of that question could be 10 pages long or I could just resume what I feel in one word, "extremely proud", well I guess two words. I met Christian 16 years ago, he was full of energy, funny, and he had the ability to turn any sad or bad situation into a joke making everybody laugh; that is what make me fell in love with him. On the other hand, he was a little immature, unfocused when it comes to work, and nothing seemed to fulfill his expectations. I always knew that his passion was a career in the military, but that was out of question in my book!…

Preface: I have many journals that I have used, on and off, throughout the years. I will be using them to aid my response, because after reading Living With a Wild God by Barbara Ehrenreich, I see no other way to fully express my change in faith than to speak to my younger self. Like Barbara, writing was a release for me, and I often reflect on my past journals, so I thought it would be appropriate to bring them into this essay. An Essay to Myself…

After letting them in that day it just wouldn’t end they wouldn’t stop coming over and trying to guilt trip us to visit their church. Finally, my mom decided if we go once we will never have to go again, and we did just that.…

After bringing him to a youth group event, the kids in my youth group made fun of him and told him how I deserved a better boyfriend. Enraged, I stopped going to almost all church events. I would only go to events where there would be more than just the youth from my old church.…
