Smaller distractions would be hard to avoid and prevent, and many times whoever the source of the distraction is has no choice. You can't stop the scratching noise of a pencil on paper or the clacking of a keyboard, so you will have to learn to work through them. Talking in class can be prevented completely, but it would be hard to achieve. Students in seventh to eighth grade are usually sensitive about being treated like kids, so talk to them like adults and set standards and limits. Eventually, they may start to listen, but remember that if they don't embarrassing them by yelling or punishing them will likely not work either. Maybe someone else will take notice and realize that other students are being quiet, and, in turn, they might stop talking, too. Remember to stay calm and remember that you shouldn't waste your breath trying to get someone else to stop talking or being distracting. Focus on what you need to do, remind yourself that what you might need to text someone can wait, the stories you need to tell might be better somewhere else, and that you'll be more successful when you listen. It's easy to become distracted, but if you work to prevent them, everyone else will have an easier time
