Dolores comes into their class and has this attitude of being annoyed with Mr. Watts and what he is teaching. “My mum glanced over at Mr. Watts, who laughed to show what a good sport he was. I wished she could have found it in herself to laugh with him. Instead, she gave him an unfriendly nod to show she was finished with us” (45). Matilda could have easily listened to her mom and not liked the book so much. Dolores gives off signals to Matilda that she doesn’t like the book and doesn’t want to hear about it. “She didn’t want to encourage me by asking questions. She didn’t want me to go deeper into that world” (35). Matilda shows bravery by thinking for herself by liking the book and Mr. Watts, even though her mom thought otherwise. Matilda also faces war and warriors coming to her island often to spread havoc. At thirteen years old, most children like her don’t have to be in these circumstances. She shows bravery by acting like an adult and dealing with the fact that people were dying right in front of her. “There was no shouting. There was no need. Everyone knew what to do. The soldiers and us. We were already known to one another” (95). The soldiers have come to them before. All the people had to bring out their inner courage when these soldiers came to them.
