Dating can be a wonderful and joyful experience, but can also be an emotional roller coaster of life. Dating can blossom into a beautiful relationship where two people can mutually support and care for one another. Other times dating just doesn’t seem to work out. Moving into the next step of being in a relationship should be taken seriously because you’re now dealing with the emotional and mental states of yourself and another person. But when a relationship doesn’t work out, it ends in either one person breaking it off or both parties coming to mutual agreement that it’s just not working out. The saying “old habits die hard” is very relatable in this type of situation. Many couples have a routine that keeps them in balance, but without the other it can cause an imbalance in that person’s life. With the imbalance that they feel, it can cause that person to lose interest in goals that they had set because of their partner such as working hard at your job or going to school for a better future for both of you. Without the drive and encouragement from their partner, someone may feel like life is pointless and meaningless. I’ve seen this happen first hand to my biological father when my mother divorced him. He started using drugs like crack and speed and lost interest in his family, work, and overall is own wellbeing. It was sad to watch and although we cared for our father, it didn’t help ease the pain he was feeling. Another example that I can give on this topic is myself. I had been in a serious relationship with someone I considered to be my best friend for almost two years. The break up was quick and unexplained and left me with a thousand questions of what went wrong. I started to lose interest in going to class and interacting with my family. I started sleeping most of my day away and had started feeling depressed. I had lost interest in my day to day

In Kitchen Table Wisdom, Dr. Rachel Remen offers countless stories demonstrating the importance of creating a medical environment that fosters intimacy, vulnerability, and a willingness to accept the hardest moments of human life. In Remen’s book, these moments all center around death and dying. Through storytelling, Remen is able to illuminate the hidden stories and feelings associated with death, the uncertainty of death, and the fear of losing a loved one. Remen demonstrates that only by breaking away from the bureaucratic and emotionless medical narrative, and instead, by simply offering open ears and a hand to hold for those who are most afraid, can create a sense of inner-peace and an acceptance of death for those dying of terminal illnesses.…

Thanks for sharing the real-life experience with the class. I think we have a lot of similar examples in daily life. I think human ecology theory can provide another perspective looking at these two cases and what causes the feeling of emotional disengagement. According to the book Marriages, families, and relationships: making choices in a diverse society, human ecology theory describes how the surrounding environment impacts the family, and how socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, gender differences, and cultural differences influence the function of families (Lamanna, Riedmann & Stewart, 2015).…
