All students of the American education system should be fluent English speakers. Martin Espada and Richard Rodriguez, two revered essay writers both possess conflicting opinions about how bilingualism should be handled. Espada believes that language has ties to culture, and they should all be preserved; however, Rodriguez’s view of bilingualism is more methodical, he thinks learning the language used for public communication is the most beneficial method, regardless of any cultural ties that may be abandoned. Martin Espada’s view of bilingualism can be explained through his usage of a metaphorical analogy, wherein his essay he wrote, “English and Spanish are like two dogs I love. This translator helped her a lot because she was able to decode the meaning of words without having to constantly ask the people around her. She would type the word in English into the translator and in turn be given the definition of the…

This argument is explained more in the essay “Their English voices prying loose, my ties to my other name,....” (22) As Rodriguez loosens his ties on his english after holding it in for so long he begins to become more comfortable with the public English speakers surrounding him.…

Being completely honest I never had an option on being bilingual. I never had the option of weather or not to absorbing the words of those late night novelas that spilled out of my dimmely brightened living room television, or early morning songs filling the kitchen with Chayanne or Los Tigres del Norte, and I didn’t have a choice on weather I went to Catholic Sunday school where I wrote and recited dozens of prayers by memory.
