Being An Over Analyzer

Have you ever contemplated what hell is like? If so, I highly encourage you to continue reading. Being an over-analyzer is as close to hell as humanly possible; believe me, I would know, as I suffer from the burden of being an over-analyzer. According to Urban Dictionary, an over-analyzer is one who looks too deeply into any situation and over thinks everything (emphasis on everything). As accurate as this definition appears to be, it doesn’t entirely encompass what it means to be an over-analyzer. Being an over-analyzer is both a curse and a blessing. Overthinking affects every aspect of one’s life whether personal, social, academic, or professional; thus, overthinking can in fact be debilitating or liberating and therefore, learning to recognize …show more content…
Over thinking makes it almost impossible to get certain tasks done. It can take the most straightforward of tasks and turn them into a complex jig-saw puzzle so much so that even a simple report such as this one can become a tangled web of frustration, anger and anxiety. I can’t even begin to recall how many times I changed my mind on what word I was going to define; overthinking goes hand in hand with being indecisive. Naturally, my hyperactive mind tried to juggle multiple words at once all while thinking way too in depth about their definitions. Over-analyzers tend to take what was meant to be a simple task and weave it into a tedious process. By doing so, it makes it very challenging to make any progress. My situation is indicative of a recent study performed by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, which suggests that a hyperactive mind can hinder [one’s] ability to perform simple tasks (Gregoire). Therefore, being an over-analyzer can make it a struggle to be productive as it stops one in their tracks quite often.
Overall, there are really only two beneficial aspects of being an over-analyzer. For one, it certainly shows in one’s work ethic, since over-analyzers are so thorough with everything there’s generally “no stone left unturned” per say. Therefore, there’s no need to explain ourselves as every detail has already been discussed. Secondly, over-analyzers know when to leave unideal situations. In conclusion (finally this mind has reached a conclusion), over analyzing is as awful and debilitating as it is helpful to one’s productivity and

I refrain from making hasty decisions, a trait that’s made it easier to manage time and keep my life organized. It’s not that I don’t enjoy some spontaneity, just that I’ve had experience with faulty planning. Thinking things through allows me to make sound, satisfying choices in both my academic and social life. It is a practice that has saved me from careless mistakes on math tests and kept my activities.…

The second assigned reading of Goleman’s book has been just as difficult as the first. I am still finding it difficult to stay interested in the content of the book. Although some of the information I fairly interesting and there are moments in the text that are quite enjoyable to read I still find myself not being that engaged with the writing. I enjoyed the brief narratives that Goleman uses to give example of the information he writes. I enjoyed the section of “When Smart Is dumb” where Goleman breaks down the actual value of thing like SAT scores and how little they matter when it comes to someone’s success if they are not emotionally intelligent.…
