An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care. They are trained to perform eye examinations, diagnose and treat eye diseases, prescribe medicines and perform eye surgery. Co-management is another option for the care of eye problems. In this system the optometrist refer the patient to an ophthalmologist for diagnosis and treatment plan for the eye problem. Once the eye problems is controlled or surgically treated then the ophthalmologist sends back the patient to the optometrist, who then continues to monitor and treat the condition or perform any post operative care based on the ophthalmologist
