Being An EMT: A Day At Work

Decent Essays
Being an EMT is one of the best jobs I have ever had. Waking up in the morning and driving to work is an easy task knowing that most likely by the end of my shift I am going to make a difference in someone’s life. Every day at work as an EMT is a different day with new people and goals. Being an EMT is extremely exciting and rewarding. Imagine rushing into a stranger’s home to help them in their worst moments. One moment you could be responding to a person having a heart attack and the next call could be an automobile crash with multiple patients with multiple injuries. Every shift and every call are different, with different challenges and outcomes for each call. You get to meet new coworkers and work as a team toward a common goal. Meeting

My experiences, academic background and personality are three key aspects of my life that make the medical field a preference and a particularly suitable field for me. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I volunteered at CentraState Medical Center working with geriatric patients. To further explore this interest, I joined the First Aid Squad in my town. Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication. After completing a four-month intensive EMT course and state exam, I can proudly say that I am now a New Jersey certified EMT.…

EMTs and Paramedics are responsible for keeping people alive and helping transport them to the nearest hospital if needed. As an EMT when they arrive on scene they have to be able to analyze the situation and get to the injured person quickly. When they are with the injured person they have to check to see what’s wrong and ask if the person is actually injured unless it is obvious, for example if they are bleeding or if the wound is visible. Once they are with the injured person they have to quickly apply bandages or a splint or whatever they need to give to the injured person. After that if the person requires more attention then it is the EMT or Paramedic responsibility to get the person to the nearest hospital as fast as they can.…

The Emergency Medical Services as we know it today has a very humble beginning based on evidence from 1500 Before Christ(B.C.) when evidence indicates a Good Samaritan treated wounds of a injured person found on the side of the road with oil and wine per protocol of that era. EMS education has grown from that day on primarily through knowledge gained from multiple conflicts and wars that date as far back as the napoleonic wars. This knowledge was taught to military medical providers and eventually to the general public following World War II. As we see from the treatment protocols used by the Good Samaritan in 1500 B.C. compared to our protocols used today many changes in the education of EMS providers have occurred.…
