The meaning of being an American is receiving liberty, freedom and equality. In the Declaration of Independence, the document stated that “all men are created equal”. However, this statement did not apply to women and African Americans. African Americans and women had a low status in society. In other words, African Americans and women could not compete with white men. For example, women should only stay home, clean houses, give birth, make bed, cook foods, and so on while the men goes out to make money. In the past, African Americans were slaves who work in plantations and do house work. African American and women did not own any property of their own or had right to vote. Obtaining these rights meant African Americans and women could escape from society’s limitation.

Everyone is free and treated with equal rights. After series of Civil war, diverse ethnicities achieve their ultimate goal of being an American. We see people collaborating with other people who are born from different part of the world. The public accepts the cultural differences and welcome new incomers. In today’s world, we interact with variety of people in daily life. On the other hand, there are still people who discriminate others by the person’s gender, nationality, and color of their skin. For example, some countries still expect women to be housewife and must have arranged marriage directed by the parents.
