Being a student is stressful. Being a working high school student is quite stressful. Being a college student is even more stressful. But, being a working full time college student tops them all and is definitely beyond stressful. Many students do not know how to relieve that stress in a positive manner. They do not know where to turn to, they think no one understands or is there for them – I can attest to this first hand – and they sometimes just hit rock bottom. Furthermore, a new addiction is born – drug addiction. There are so many high school and college-aged students that turn to drugs as a coping mechanism because they feel as if there is nothing else to remove the stress that they are enduring. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction occurs when the chemical dependency is combined with a strong desire to use the substance. Many times, the stress comes from over working themselves without breaks to exploit their time for themselves. The problem lies when parents, professors and teachers do not realize the kind of pressure they are putting these students under. There are many solutions to this problem. Understanding and being there for the students can play a huge role in their lives and is quite frankly the most influential solution, to say the least.
