It was dark in that old abandon warehouse, where we met every day after school. It smelled like mildew and on that occasion it smelled like gunpowder. Things started to get out of hand, one thing after another, and Drew was on the ground bleeding as blood started to fill that warehouse floor. I heard the piercing sounds of the sirens gaining closer and closer to us every passing second. All the gang members scattered as they got in their cars and left Drew dead on the ground and me standing, without anywhere to go. All I ever wanted was to feel like I belonged, but all I was given was a 2 year sentence to jail and addiction to various drugs. This story represents the majority of teens. They just want to feel apart of something but their cities …show more content…
Ohio was ranked 23 out of 51 states of having the highest number of babies born to teens (“Ohio adolescent reproductive health facts,” 2014). Many teens become pregnant because there is a lack of activities to keep them involved in, and not enough programs expressing the realities of being a teen mom. There will always be teen pregnancies, but there are many ways to help limit the amount of teen pregnancies. One solution is to create more programs about pregnancies and safe sex. There needs to be many more programs that show and explain how hard it really is being a teen mom and how this will affect them for the rest of their lives. Having programs that show the reality of teen pregnancies will help teens to not glamorize being pregnant and help them understand the hardships of being pregnant. There also needs to be programs that talk about safe sex instead of strictly abstinence. If safe sex was taught instead of just abstinence more teens would consider being on birth control and so forth. These programs would help limit the amount of teen pregnancies. Unlike programs, activity centers would actually give the teen some place to go. These activity centers would provide some place for teens to hang out together with lots of cool activities and adult supervision instead of just going to each others houses every day. Also, activity centers are different than programs because teens can connect with others over the same problems and seek advice from their peers. Although activity centers have many differences, they also have similarities. Activity centers and programs both help the teen to think more about the realities of being a teen mom. They also both help them feel like they belong and help them realize they are not alone. Programs and activity centers will help with the lack of activities there are for teens and help limit the amount of teen

At times, the organization should recruit their students to volunteer and keep them engaged in school. Additionally, I believe more neighborhood centers should be placed in neighborhoods with low incomes. The purpose of neighborhood centers is to help the poverty-stricken communities by giving resources, education, and helping bring the community together. These neighborhood centers would provide even more education and resources further outside of…

The federal funding of abstinence-only sex education programs has been a controversial topic for years. For over a decade the United States has been funding abstinence-only programs, but the question still remains whether or not these programs are effective and should be continued. This is a controversial topic because the United States has the highest rates for teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases amongst the developed nations. Although we do need to reduce the rates for teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, I believe that federal funding of abstinence-only sex education programs should be revoked. While there is a strong need to implement programs to reduce high teenage pregnancy and STD rates, these programs should be effective and they should not be costly.…

The use of contraception is one of our nation’s most controversial topics. In addition to the controversy over using contraceptives, the age deemed appropriate for women to use contraceptives is also highly debated. Teen pregnancy is a well recognized problem and community health nurses (CHN) are in a great position to apply measures to reduce its occurrence and lessen the impact pregnancy has on a teen and her baby when it happens. Using an upstream perspective, the community health nurse should critically assess factors contributing to a teen’s pregnancy and gather information about the teen’s perception on that topic, their satisfaction with sex education, barriers to obtain contraceptives, and availability, accessibility and affordability of resources. To gather this information, the community nurse can send surveys to middle and high school students; this may be done online, in school or by mail. Based on this assessment and a review of literature,…
