Being A Teal Rope

Decent Essays
I believe I should be involved in this program because helping others is something I have always lived by. Being an approachable, kind hearted person has always been important to me. In my entire life, my friends, family, and peers would come to me multiple times looking for a person to talk to or receive advice for their personal issues. I have had a friend or two that has contemplated suicide once; therefore, from that day on I made sure that I would be there for anybody that needs help or just to show that someone does care about them. To me that is what being a teal rope is all about, to help out and care for others that need any kind of support possible.

I would be an asset in the program because I love interacting with people and learning new ways to improve their lives. I quickly discovered my passion for children and this field through the past two years of work experience at the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home (LBCH). I am fortunate enough to be the recreation leader, lifeguard, and math tutor of a diverse group of kids with heart-wrenching upbringings, circumstances, and for some, communication setbacks. My inner longing to provide more assistance to them communication-wise grows daily. The knowledge I am obtaining at ULM, the child-interaction skills I am gaining through the LBCH, and the God-given love and compassion for people all contribute and work simultaneously towards thriving…

Like any other clinical experience, going into the Salvation Army I set goals for what I would achieve during my learning experience to focus my learning and enrich my knowledge base. My first personal goal was to go into the experience with an open mind and allow myself to learn more about this population and the people I would care for. This goal was achieved because I can talk about moments that I experienced that contributed to my growth of knowledge and awareness to this population. This goal was reached by sitting with multiple individuals over their meal and talk to them about their hardships and what they were going through. This allowed me to share my compassionate heart and listen to people who needed someone to talk to and hear about…
