A teacher’s assistant helps teachers with classroom activities and learning, generally in a primary or secondary level school. The work involves working with children or teenagers, on a one-to-one basis in small groups, who may have physical, visual, hearing or behavioural, emotional, or learning difficulties and who therefore have special educational needs. On an ever increasing basis the role of the Teaching Assistant is to help those with emotional or physical problems to achieve their full potential while in education.

The qualifications of a Teacher’s Assistant are that they must have experience of working with children, which is essential and they must also possess a certain level of maturity, which is also an advantage. Some employers may ask employees to have a formal qualification such as a FETAC certificate in Childcare, Special Needs Assistants or both. Special Education Needs (SEN) Teachers: These teachers provide individualised support to students with learning problems and disabilities which prevent them from benefiting from the normal standard system of education. Special education needs teacher’s assist students with certain and specific learning problems such as Asperger’s Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia. They also cater for physically disabled students, and those with mental, psychological, emotional and social difficulties. Special education needs teachers work as resource teachers in mainstream schools and they are responsible for teaching disadvantaged students in the class or in a separate class. Some special education needs teachers work in special schools, catering for particular difficulties and disabilities, while other special education needs teachers work as part of a visiting teachers scheme, providing specialised teaching to a handful of students on a region-by-region
