When it comes to my family it is just my mother and me versus the world. For over the past 18 years of my life there was only one person who has stood by me throughout my accomplishments and recognitions beyond my educational career. The one person who is always attempting to keep me happy, safe, protected, and nourished. That person has been my mother. Her ideology was simple, “work hard to get paid or slack off to get slayed (fired, not killed).” Being a single mother with an only son was a great challenge for her. Coming as an undocumented citizen in the United States, her availability to get a job were minimized dramatically, but over the years that never prevented her from providing to me over my childhood. While I was growing up, as many of my peers I presume, lived under the roof and rules that our parents gave to us to behave and to do good in our academics. It’s was quite effective to me over my adolescent years, but I was not allowed of many things, I would have a curfew at 6pm, I would have no type of social interaction with my friends during the weekdays right after school, I would do no type of sports until my junior year of high school, and I would not, under any circumstance whatsoever have a girlfriend without notifying her first. Personally, I would presume that’s a bit harsh on the subject of becoming an adolescent who wants some privacy during those years, but that didn’t work from my mother’s perspective of being a parent.
