The four more common maladaptive patterns are alcoholism, burnout, post-shooting traumatic reactions, and suicide. I will be talking about burnout and post-shooting traumatic reactions because I have known more about suicide and alcoholism from other situations.
Burnout is defined as to fail, wear out, or become exhausted by making excessive demands on energy, strength, or resources. Not all cops experience burnout, and burnout can effect more than just the police. Helping professionals as well as those which both help and control, such as law enforcement, the judiciary, and juvenile and adult corrections. Herbert Fruedenberger was the first person to identify and define burnout in 1974. These burned-out individuals feel emotionally drained or exhausted, depressed, and exhibit irritability and negative, cynical attitudes towards people they work with. I almost think burnout effects more than just those helping professionals. I think anyone can show symptoms of burnout, but I wonder if it is the same term? On the other hand, PSTR is a lot more difficult to treat and help the individual out. Every situation is different and every person is different.
