Being a Police Officer
Law enforcement is a very important branch of the Governments responsibilities. In law enforcement, there are many jobs that can be offered. One of the most common of these jobs is being a police officer. Police officers tasks can be very difficult depending on the circumstances. Police Officers have a very challenging job, but one that offers adequate rewards.
Police officers work in a very broad measure of different conditions. These conditions can vary between huge cities, or country, working night hours or in the middle of the day (career cruising). “There are many other available jobs that are very similar to being a police officer…” (Harr), giving those interested in advancing to a special branch of law enforcement many options. Harr also states in his book: Careers in Criminal Justice and Related Fields, “a person typically starts their career as a police officer and then advances to a more specialized field” (Harr). It seems that having at least a few years of regular police officer experiences gives a person a better sense of what they want to specialize in. That is the reason that few people are anxious to go straight into more specialized career fields at the start of their career. It is easy to see the wisdom of this strategy. Some of the specialized branches of law enforcement that police officers choose to apply for a position in are narcotics, traffic, gang, bomb, homicide, auto theft, sexual crime, and others(career cruising). All of these branches are very major departments of law enforcement that have countless employees working together to solve. Most all police departments allow their officers to apply for advancement after a few years of service as a police officer (career cruising). Most colleges have their own police academy, (Criminal Justice USA), and this type of course is highly recommended for those interested in becoming a police officer. Some police departments even go so far as to require that applicants have police academy training (Criminal Justice USA). This is usually the case in areas where there is more competition for jobs in law enforcement. While transferring from one area to another, it is not usually very hard to be re-hired as a police officer. This is the case because already having some experience as a police officer significantly increases the chances of getting hired into another steady position by another police department (career cruising). Another thing that is important to remember is that when applying, knowledge in the ways of the police force, and displaying a good moral character significantly increases the chances of getting hired (career cruising). This is the case for almost any profession, but perhaps even more important for police
