Persuasive Speech About Police Brutality

Being a police officer comes with great responsibilities. They are expected to maintain law and order, protect the lives of citizens, reduce fear of crime and most importantly prevent crime. But in the past few years, it seems as if they’re the ones putting fellow citizens in fear. Police brutality isn’t a topic you frequently hear about, but the times we do it’s nothing short of a serious problem. I’m not sure if it’s to do with race or just about the law enforcement agencies believing they can abuse the power that is a privilege to them. But in most cases it’s evident that what these officers do, is not within their job description. Before some of us were born, the issue with Rodney King transpired. Some young people, like myself, hadn’t heard of this case before, so after doing extensive research I can say without exaggerating that I am utterly astonished and disgusted. You’d think that after choosing a topic like this, I’d understand more, but the truth is that we won’t ever get accustomed to the way police officers act sometimes. In Rodney King’s case, they were charged with use of excessive force. The Los Angeles Mayor at the time, Tom Bradley, said “The men who beat Rodney King do not deserve to wear the uniform of the LAPD.” Rodney King sued the entire city of Los Angeles, California and was awarded 3.8 million dollars. Fortunately for King, he was able to turn his life around for the better, but it’s a rare idea for the many other victims of police brutality to end up this way as well. As I was researching more cases, I came across an article on inquisitr. It introduced me to the idea of cops wearing video cameras at all times, and how it dropped police brutality rates by 60 percent. As it was proved the police officers behaved better when they knew they were being filmed at all times and so did citizens. If we could implement this idea into every city and let it be known, then I know for a fact that police brutality rates will decrease
