Being a Physician Assistant is more than just wearing a white coat. To me, it means helping, encouraging, and motivating someone, whether it be physically or emotionally. I love being able to create relationships with people and having one-on-one conversations. During my time volunteering at Aria Jefferson Torresdale, I meet various patients. In one particular case, a young woman was getting a breast ultrasound because she had a lump that needed to be checked out. She seemed very young. I later learned that she was only fifteen years old, and already a 12th grader in high school. It was unfortunate to see someone so young and bright to be in this situation. After my grandfather had surgery, I helped my aunt, who is a nurse, with small therapy exercises. Even though he is my own relative, I liked that I was able to hold his arm and help him through his recovery. Having my aunt there allowed me to assist him better. Not only did it help him, but it also made me feel a little warmer inside knowing that I was able to do something. It is a win-win situation in my opinion. This is why I always try to join as many volunteer events that I can and why I joined the Red Cross, Environmental, and Do Something Clubs at my school. I enjoy working alone as well as with others and with people of all ages. Bringing various ideas together can inspire new ways of thinking, which can help when involving a person’s life. In addition, traveling to different cities and countries showed me different cultures, environments, and ways of living. I hope that after I become a Physician Assistant I will have the chance to travel and help those who need it the most. At the end of the day, I just want to be proud of myself and know that I made a difference in someone’s life.
