Ageism In The Workplace Report

Just a month before attending WCU I had no idea what I wanted my major to be. Originally, I had wanted to be a Music Major and work in the music industry. Once I further read on about the requirements to be a music major at WCU, I changed my mind. After that, I didn’t know what to do. I was awful with anything regarding science, history, and math. The only thing I was never really bad at was English; it had always been my stronger point in my K-12 classes. I always loved to read and would even get in trouble for reading in school, which is a bit upsetting since I could have just done what other students did and went in the bathroom and did drugs, but I was just reading. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with English. I knew I didn’t want to …show more content…
The first one that I believed to be one of my best piece of work is titled Ageism Manifesting into the Workplace. For this paper, we had to choose a topic that relates to professional communication skills in the workplaces. For my topic, I chose to write about ageism in the workplace and why it’s important for newcomers in the workplace to be aware of the stereotypes surrounding older people. Ageism is something I had never thought about because it isn’t something that is paid much attention to. After this research paper, I realized it is something that needs to be known more about and something that more people need to be aware of, whether it pertains to the workplace of not. Racism and sexism are very well talked about in today’s world; however, ageism is looked over a lot of the times. Ageism isn’t intentional most of the time, like racism and sexism, which is why it more people need to be aware of it. If someone in the workplace makes a comment about someone else’s age that person can file a complaint with the ADEA (Age Discrimination in Employment Act). This could impact the company’s reputation and the person who made the comment could lose their job. Doing this research paper broadened my ability to gather sources, link sources together, conduct an in-person interview with a source to use in my paper, and make a graph or table in Word. …show more content…
The piece of writing is an adjustment letter we were to include in a portfolio we made in the class. We had to act as if we were representing a company and responding to an email from an upset customer. Learning how to write an adjustment letter proved to be a valuable tool. For the adjustment letter, we had to act as if we were emailing a customer back after receiving a complaint letter. This was a valuable thing to learn because even if some of the students don’t handle complaint letters in their jobs, they still need to know how to handle situations involving conflict. Whether the situation relates to the workplace or personal matters, these things need to know how to be handled to avoid further conflict that could result in the loss of one’s job. On the first page in the word file is the complaint letter we were given to respond to; the second page is my written adjustment letter to the complaint

I didn't realize that playing and teaching these young adolescent minds would soon be the major I would be studying. I’ve chosen lots of areas to study throughout high school, but I’ve always kept changing my mind. The Literal Enactments of the Dual Concepts of ‘Creating an Area of Visibility’ and ‘Providing a Platform’ for the De-marginalization of Age Studies Kathleen Woodward’s “Introduction” in the book Figuring Age: Women, Bodies, Generations, is riveting text that deals with the subject of age studies (AS) in association with older women and their representation as well as self-representation of discourses on aging and their experiences with aging. Stephen Katz’s (2014) text “What Is Age Studies”, discusses the critical contributions being made to AS as “scattered and splintered distributions of academics, advocates, public intellectuals, and political leaders working across various organizations with different resources and mandates” (para. 3).…

In Western societies the process of aging is seen as a bad thing to happen, and most people do not respect their elders like other parts of the world. Alice Waters states, "I have been many different places around the world where getting older is something you look forward to. You have an opportunity to be someone who is respected, someone who is contributing to life in a very important way." If you take care of your body throughout life, then in old age you have a better chance to be able to care for yourself better. Living longer means you gain more knowledge, you can spend longer time with your family, etc. With the stigma older people face in Western societies it can also be hard.…

The multiplicity of the governmental and programmatic reaction to elder abuse can be a challenge for social workers (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). The ability to oppose abuse and recognize the status quo is creating disagreements while equalizing older adults to children in demand for protection (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). According to Podnieks (2008), social workers may misunderstand ageism in many situations where the perpetrator is supportive, when minimizing the abuse by the abuser or victim because of a belief in the family sanctity values, where there is no or limited information or an absence of understanding or because of language barriers, cognitive limitations, or time constraints, or when the victim disagrees he or she might have the fear…

When I received an academic scholarship to Sierra Nevada College, I was thrilled to be at a school that offered a broad-based liberal arts education that would also provide me opportunity to strengthen my swimming career. I enrolled at Sierra Nevada College, and because I wanted to explore my options, my major was Undeclared. My main objectives were to immerse myself in a natural environment and receive an education that nurtured my many interests. I took photography, film, English, math, and Environmental Science in a small school that offered lots of personal attention. Over the course of the school year, I’d given considerable thought to what I’d like to study and pursue as a career path, and I’d determined that I want to pursue a career…

Halfway through my first semester at UCF, I feel a lot less optimistic than I did when first starting out. As a starry-eyed freshman, I was determined to do my absolute best, but I’ve somehow lost sight of that goal along the way, preferring to binge-watch Japanese shows, write song lyrics, avoid doing laundry, and order things I really don’t need from eBay. Since I find that extremely entertaining, it’s also become quite obvious that my sense of humor has deteriorated to nothing. However, I have still managed to achieve most of my more concrete academic goals, such as maintaining my GPA and choosing a major.…

Ageism – Prejudice and discrimination directed against people because of their age; can be directed against any age group, including youth I had received my certified nursing assist certification when I was a junior in high school. I had tried getting a job as a CNA after I had graduated, but no one would hire me. It didn’t matter that I had made a perfect score on my state exam, which consisted of a procedure and written exam, or that I had promised to be the best employee, they saw me unfit for the job because of my age. Everywhere wanted someone that was older and had more experience. Credential society – the use of diplomas, degrees, or certificates to determine who is eligible for jobs…

Time went by and so did the grade levels, I would always struggle with one subject and thrive in another. Ageism is an identity category which has affected my life, and is a topic I have been able to learn more about through this class. Keri DeJong and Barbara J. Love examine ageism and adultism in our society, and explain how ageism is the oppression of young people and elders as age-based social identity groups, and the ways in which access to participation in society and relationships are organized on the basis of age. Ageism has affected decisions about power, voice, and decision making as a result of societal expectations rather than biological differences. An example of ageism which I have experienced is the denial of teenagers to vote until they are eighteen years old. Teenagers may be allowed to engage in political campaigns, and help support…

My parents and I sometimes disagree on many things, but today we had a conversation about how I apparently do not work as hard as my mother did when she was my age. This does relate more to ageism but I feel it still is important to explore. My mom worked a job, and went to school when she was 18; I, however, am a nanny once a week and taking 16 credits under the ASCENT program. I do not understand how my parents can say that I do not work as hard as they did because I had the chance to use certain opportunities to my advantage.…
