Being A Middle Child Syndrome

Improved Essays
Middle Child Syndrome is perceived as the negative outcome of being a middle child. The factors linked to this syndrome are parents congratulating the oldest child and coddling the youngest. This leads to the middle child being a depressed over-achiever. However, these stereotypical traits were not apart of my family dynamic. Therefore, I wasn’t affected in this manner. Personally, I gleaned many benefits throughout my life due to my position as the middle of seven children. These advantages include my outgoing personality, desire for success, independent spirit and quest for adventure.

My outgoing personality has opened many doors. I believe this attribute formed, because I grew up, not only as a middle child, but the middle of a large family. Living in such a dynamic, you are required to learn how to stick up for yourself and gain the attention you want by being loud and outgoing. This ability to be extroverted has enabled me to start school, work, and personal relationships easily. I believe these relationships enhanced my school experience, allowed me to gain work opportunities, and led to lifelong friendships.

Being the middle child, I had to compete with my siblings for the attention of my parents, relatives, and friends. As a result, I worked hard to get good grades in school and do well in sports. However, in time, this desire to achieve changed from trying to gain external attention to being internally motivated. This feature led to success in high school with grades and

There are many assumptions as to the different factors keeping students from succeeding in school. The author, Paul Tough, takes it upon himself to write about what has and has not worked educationally for students in How Children Succeed. The examples, stories, and research give light to the many variables that can negatively affect a child’s educational path. The author’s focus seems to be the importance of the students environment at home and school because it is the most influential factor. Some students are born into very stressful home environments and may have a harder time succeeding in school due to their home life.…

I read a study last week that described middle children as the most forgotten. It didn’t use those words exactly, but with phrases like “least talkative”, “least bold” and “lack of attention” it’s easy to get the gist. As the second oldest in a family of four kids, I originally agreed with this sentiment. I’ve had more than my fair share of being forgotten by my parents at shops. Twice the amount of all my siblings combined.…

I am a middle child. I was born two years after my sister Meredith, and Caleigh came six years after me. Within my family and friends, I am known as the quiet, quintessential middle child. For the first 16 years of my life, I was always an afterthought to the craziness of the first-born and the baby of the family, and I loved it‒ it made me independent and self-reliant. I was very comfortable being the easy-going child, happily accepting anything that came my way.…

My parents have always challenged me to strive to do my best since I was a child. From pushing me to learn how to ride a bike at age five, to striving me to achieve a higher ACT score to attend the college I love, I learned how to become very independent and credible. As I approached my high school years, I changed mentally by creating a positive mindset after my freshman year. As to this day, getting a 3.11-grade point average has affected me in both positive and negative ways. One characteristic that I figured out about myself is that I am a person who learns from mistakes due to the fact that I am a tactile learner.…

The middle or second born child or children often have the sense of not belonging. They fight to receive attention from parents and others because they feel many times they are being ignored or dubbed off as being the same as another sibling. They tend to have fewer pictures in the family photo album alone, compared to firstborns. Being in the middle, a child can feel insecure. This…

Even though school tends to encourage parents to raise their children by concerted cultivation, a philosophy of parenting in which parents tend to foster their child’s expertise by introducing multiple organized activities throughout their schedules, not everyone has access to this style of child rearing and prefers to use the accomplishment of natural growth instead, where children are free to do whatever they want during youth because adulthood is challenging. The middle-class, which seems to exercise the first one, therefore enables their children to succeed not only academically but also socially and financially. This phenomenon is emphasized by researchers and it appeared that just a few of the lowest class children whose parents followed…

An experience from my life that I shall analyze using a sociological lens took place during elementary and high school. Opening in elementary school, which I attended after my two eldest sisters had already began a few years before me, I started to be noticed by numerous teachers as their sibling. My oldest sisters both did a notable job in school, achieving noticeably high grades and a well-known acknowledgment for their excellent behaviour. Consequently, my teachers all had established high expectations for me to reach by the time I was in grade eight. These set outlooks from teachers about how I was supposed to perform and to what level of success I was expected to exceed was a highly effective motivator.…

While children are in the early stages of growth, they have been praised and complimented on their good grades and intelligence. However, this type of praise and compliment is not the key to success in schoolwork and life. The most important key to success lies in the focus on effort not praises and compliments based off how well a child does on something, such as a game or test. Behavioral psychology or more commonly referred to as behaviorism explains why putting forth effort is important. Behaviorism falls under the category of a school of thought.…
