In working with many different individuals in today’s society it is important to be knowledgeable in many different areas. Not only is it important to learn about different cultures, but how family systems operate, to be an advocate, and how people may be affected by certain events in their lives but also continuing education so we stay knowledgeable in these areas; this is what generalist practice means to me. In being a competent social worker it is important to take all aspects into account, we have to make sure to look at the bigger picture as well as the minor details. In doing this we take into account micro, mezzo, and macro practice skills. Generalist practice is a very important skill used by social workers in making sure they are knowledgeable in all areas in order to provide the best care for their clients.
The article that I chose to read for this paper was: Assessing low-income African-American preschoolers’ behavior problems in relationship to community violence, inter-partner conflict, parenting, informal social support and social skills by Oravecz, Sharpe and Randolph. This study examined has sought to identify individual-, family- and community-level factors that may influence children’s well-being within the context of deleterious living conditions.
