Although cheerleaders can use any jump they want in a cheer, the toe touch is the main one they use. When doing this jump, the cheerleader needs to make sure to have his or her chest up so they do not fall forward.
The herkie was named after Lawrence Herkimer, the founder of the National Cheerleaders Association. Herkimer held the first NCA cheer camp and also invented pom poms. For this jump the person will choose their most flexible leg. The leg they decide to choose will be straight and the opposite leg bent. If the person’s right leg is straight, the right arm will be bent while the left arm is straight or vice versa. The bent leg will face toward the floor.
There are a two different types of hurdlers. The difference between a side hurdler and a herkie is the person’s bent leg is level with their hip instead of facing the ground. For a side hurdler the straight leg will be positioned out to the side just like it would be in a toe touch. The cheerleader’s arms will be in a “T” motion. In a front hurdler, one’s straight leg is thrown as high as possible directly in front of their face. Their arms will reach for the straight leg in a touchdown motion. A touchdown motion, also known as “candlesticks”, where hands are in a fist and arms are straight. The bent knee is pointed towards the …show more content…
The basic stunt has four people. This consist of a flyer, backspot, main base, secondary base, and sometimes a frontspot. A flyer, also known as the top girl, is the girl lifted into the air during a stunt. The flyer is usually one of the smallest girls on the team. She is to stay as tight as she can during the entire stunt. Although many flyers are flexible with good balance, this is not completely required in order to be a top girl. Bases hold the flyer in the air during the stunt. There are two different bases. The main base usually holds the most weight. Main bases already have the foot in their hands when performing stunts, which makes it a lot easier. The secondary base does not hold as much weight, however catches the flyer’s foot. This can be very tricky if the flyer does not know what they are supposed to do. A backspot stabilizes the stunt from the back. The backspot holds a majority of the weight from pulling up on the top girl’s ankles. Front spot’s are not always necessary, but can come in handy when help is needed in an advanced stunt or if there is extra people left over. They stand in front of the bases and pull up on their wrists to help with the
