While cartographers might be consider a glorified map makers of the past, they are still among us doing their daily duties. Cartographers are responsible for measuring and mapping out the Earth’s surface (“Cartographers and Photogrammetrists”). They need to collect and analyze data to develop accurate maps using airplanes and satellite surveillance (“Cartographers and Photogrammetrists”). In general, cartographers must be able to collect and analyze data to develop accurate maps. However, those in the military may have to collect information relating to the enemy forces (“Cartographers and Photogrammetrists”). This includes using aerial photograph and other methods to learn about their size, strength, location and capabilities. In the entire Unites States, there is about 82 colleges that has some bachelor’s degree that could be useful for cartographers (“Cartographers and Photogrammetrists”). A cartographer may also have an option to become certified in GIS/Land Information systems and remote sensing designations (“How to Become a Cartographer in 5 Steps”). Both of which is part of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and both requires a total of six years’ experience and a qualifying exam (“How to Become a Cartographer in 5 Steps”).
