The Being 314 Clipper was a flying boat commissioned to Pan American Airlines. Pan American went to Boeing and asked for a long-range, four-engine flying boat. Boeing catered to their needs creating the model 314, nicknamed the “Clipper” after oceanic ships. The Boeing 314 “Clipper” was a jumbo aircraft of it’s time and utilized a three tail-fin assembly allowing more control over the flying boat. The “Clipper” made its first scheduled trans-Atlantic flight on June 28th, 1939.

The Boeing 314 “Clipper” was the choice of wealthy Americans, transatlantic flight had now undergone an evolution for the rich. The interior of the ship was a similar setup to that of a cruise liner ship. It seems to me that the focus of this aircraft was passenger

This air/spacecraft was designed and fabricated by Scaled Composites, owned by Burt Rutan an aerospace designer. The financial backing of this venture was mad by Paul Allen a co-founder of Microsoft. The idea of SpaceShipOne is to get average people into non-governmental private spaceflight. Burt Rutan has also contracted sought after Sir Richard Branson for his knowledge and ambition on private space travel.

SpaceShipOne has made a total of seventeen flights with actual spaceflight being made on the 15th flight. After two more successful space flights SpaceShipOne was awarded the ten million dollar Ansari X Prize for repeated flights in a privately developed reusable spacecraft. The first flight made by SpaceShipOne was piloted by Mike Melville on June 21st, 2004 who ascended to three hundred and thirty thousand feet to make his private suborbital flight. SpaceShipOne can carry the pilot and two additional passengers. A turbofan-powered airplane named the “White Knight” is what takes the aircraft to the designated altitude needed to launch the spacecraft.
