Bein As A Role Model

Improved Essays
Three times a week, I volunteer an hour of my time to tutor and guide middle and elementary school students at my former elementary school. Since I was in middle school, I have been the most passionate about math, science, and service, and it was important to me once I reached high school to share these passions with younger students. On some days, I am helping a seventh grader understand the orders of operations, while on other days I am guiding second and third grade Girl Scouts in a craft. These short encounters have been among the most defining experiences in my high school career, and I did not expect to gain from these afternoons as much as the students do. Not only am I helping a younger student develop her skills and values, I am learning more about myself. I learn how to approach problems unconventionally while I teach the students how to use the Pythagorean theorem properly. I learn patience while I teach the students how to make blankets for the children’s hospital. By applying what I am passionate about, such as being service-minded and math, I witness other students develop their interests and passions. …show more content…
Being a role model to these students causes me to be a better person through the building of my leadership qualities while exercising my interests in hopes that I can, one day, apply my interests in a future

The Northwestern R-I FFA Chapter is looking to reorganize the FFA Alumni. At one point, Northwestern R-I had an FFA Alumni, which was created to support and promote the FFA organization, FFA activities and agricultural education on local, state, and national levels. Personally I think having an FFA Alumni will benefit not only this chapter, but it will also benefit this community and surrounding areas. According to “Starting a local FFA Alumni Chapter Handbook,” FFA is a lifelong organization that begins in the seventh grade and lasts as long as you want it. Members can begin as student members and then activate their alumni membership or they may simply begin as alumni.…

Through high school, Lincoln Charter has been founded on the principles of honesty, respect, empathy, responsibility, service, and preparedness. While I have applied all of these principles in my life, two of those principles have played an important role in an activity outside of my academic life. Ever since the summer before my junior year I have become a monthly volunteer at Mecklenburg Community Church, in their youth ministry and I have strongly applied the principles of service and empathy. In volunteering monthly in their youth ministry it has shaped me as a person who is ready to serve others no matter what might be going on in my life outside of church. Life offers a multitude of life changing experiences, serving at Mecklenburg Community…

Middle school can be a difficult obstacle for students but it can be more difficult for the teachers whom are teaching those students. There are many students whom may have a learning ability within any subject as all students learn and think differently. In addition to academic, a student may also be dealing with a personal issue which may affects the student’s capability of wanting to learn and/or succeed within their academics along with seeking help with their personal struggles. As a potential middle school special education math teacher, I interview teachers at Central Middle School in Dover, DE. As a former attendance officer at Central Middle School and a current Extra-Time Math Teacher, I am grateful to have current/former colleague…

Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a date that will forever be a part of history, a tragedy that shook the world. I recall going back to school the following week, an 11 year old Muslim 7th grader ready to start her day. Boy was it difficult. The deadly stares I received while commuting on the NJ transit bus to and from school. I felt like I was the blame for every tragedy that has occurred.…

My interest in education dates back to my undergrad years at Boise State University, where I made it a point to excel inaccessibility, communication, and knowledge. When I was a junior, for example, I took a Shakespeare course taught by Dr. Matthew Hansen and participated in a service-learning project called “Shake It Up After School.” A program designed to help undergraduates and elementary school students explore the artistic, historic, and cultural importance of Shakespeare by reading, discussing, rehearsing, and performing one of his plays. When I began the program, I had the opportunity to work with 4th, 5th, & 6th graders at a local school named Lowell Elementary. At the time the objective was simple, I needed to make sure every student knew his or her lines before performance day.…

For the longest time, I carried the words of Ms. Chobot, my English teacher at Fulton Elementary School, in my head and heart. According to her, I was poor in English, lacked basic courtesies, was a disturbance in class and never participated in anything. She eventually dismissed me as a hopeless case with no chance of doing well in life. She had made a judgment – I would not have a bright future. And all this, when the other teachers in the same school approved of my behavior in their class and found me to be a quick learner.…

Not only can essential lessons like these be learned, but there is a sense of pride that many feel when they put a smile on someone’s face or give them something they have always needed or wanted. As a result, students start to realize how much they have the ability to make a difference. These life-changing experiences shape how youth interact with their…

I remember my eighth grade year at Our Lady of Angels School quite warmly. The sense of community, the anticipation of graduating, and our upbeat classroom spirit are the first things I think of when I look back on my experiences there. Our eighth grade classroom may not look any different from standard classrooms; one wall displays a brilliantly bright whiteboard, the other holds windows which peer down onto the playground below, and various memos, posters, and particularly good assignments cover the remaining white walls. Outside, the bright afternoon sunlight glistens upon a square courtyard containing our lockers, lunch tables, and statue of Mary. However standard my classroom may seem, it is there that I felt a sense of comfort as I did my work, for the thirty-five students surrounding me…

For my service learning placement, I decided to volunteer my time with the Greater Ohio Virtual School and was able to tutor two students for about 18 hours and 30 minutes. The subject areas that I focused on with these students were Spanish and English. This service learning experience has altered my perspectives on identity and personal development and has taught me valuable lessons that I intend to remember for my career as a future educator. For instance, in relation to clarifying my future profession, service learning taught me that although teaching isn’t always easy, that it is worth it.…
