Analysis Of The Diary Of Anne Frank

The diary of Anne frank recently celebrated its 70th anniversary on January 1, 2016. Nevertheless, after seventy years of publication, there are still some issues with the text. The Diary of a Young Girl is, as the name implies, a diary. This fact brings up a number of issues with the publications of this text. Throughout the seventy years of publications, this diary has had various versions, published in many languages. Anne’s father, Otto Frank, edited these versions in order to maximize their scope. The media has also had a big part in idolizing Anne, accentuating her cheerful, optimistic side, while burying her deeper, more thoughtful side. In order to respect Anne Frank’s privacy, and to combat to the excessive glorification and marketing of her, and her diary, this text should not continue to be read.

Portrayed in movies, television shows, and even reviews, Anne, known as a constantly optimistic, smiling, innocent teenager. This is in order to make her story sellable. The back of the definitive addition explains that Anne’s diary “has become a world classic and a timeless testament to the human spirit” (Back cover). Throughout her diary, Anne complains continuously about her family and housemates. This is for good reason, as they are without personal areas due to confined space. This is not the ‘timeless testament to the human spirit’ that was intended to be portrayed. In Alvin H. Rosenfeld’s “Anne Frank and The Future of Holocaust Memory”, Rosenfeld explains, “By now readers know these words and can repeat them by heart. They are not false to a certain side of Anne Frank –the cheerful, optimistic side– but they hardly suffice to encapsulate the full meaning of her life and death” (Rosenfeld).
