Behind the Lights Hollywood could not possibly be bad for us. Actually, there are many reasons that Hollywood has a negative effect on society. Some of these reasons are the way Hollywood says you have to look to be considered pretty, or the way Hollywood says you have to act, and how you have to dress to be considered cool. Another could be the reputation Hollywood gives America to the rest of the world.
The first reason Hollywood has a negative effect on society is the way it says a girl has to look to be pretty. Hollywood says you have to be super skinny to be considered pretty. This has caused many problems in the younger female population.
One of these problems is eating disorders. The eating disorders include anorexia and bulimia. “Anorexia is one of the most deadly psychiatric illnesses, it kills twenty percent of those who are afflicted with it (Carson).” “Over the last fifty years both of these have seen a dramatic increase with young females. Most of this is due to Hollywood pushing new views on body image. A one to five percent increase does not sound like a big difference but it is a lot higher than it used to be. You are only cool if you follow their rules. “Some of this is due to television shows promoting values such as materialism and a hard partying lifestyle (Peek).” This is a huge problem because Hollywood has many bad role models, such as the cast of Jersey Shore. These people party twenty four seven, and when young adults see this they think they have to do that to fit in. They want to live a life just like that and it is causing them to throw their lives away. It is causing them to do this in ways such as getting addicted to illegal substances or alcohol.
