Behind The Bookmaker's Window

Decent Essays
As a child, I was fascinated by the bookmakers at the end of our road.
I daydreamed about the magical work going on behind those darkened windows to bring great story books to us kids…
My eventual enlightenment over what really went on behind the bookmaker’s window did little to dampen my fascination with the power of words. I studied Communications, at Goldsmiths, majored in journalism, landed a job as a current affairs reporter, and then decided that crime reporting wasn’t for me.
I was more at home with inspirational stories about people who did positive things and with creating PR opportunities by finding the story behind the story.
Since then I’ve moved between various journalism, editor and PR roles and taught journalism to undergraduates

Typically when looking at literature a writer’s purpose is not so black and white more often than not a piece is crafted using a culmination of subtleties to persuade a reader without the writer having to blatantly state his or her opinion. Such is the case in “The Heist at Harry’s”; a New York Times article by Doreen Carvajal. Over the course of the article Carvajal uses varying forms of rhetoric as she examines the robbery of the Harry Winston jewelry store. A heist that was committed by none other than the Pink Panthers; an elaborate organization of jewel thieves known across Europe. By reviewing this count of true crime Carvajal indirectly persuades her readers of the threat of the Pink Panthers…

As a child, I remember my grandma reading me The Little Engine that Could every time I visited her house. Which may seem slightly odd that, that’s what I enjoyed as a kid. It quickly led to me writing in school. During kindergarten, we were all about writing our own books. For example, I ended that year with 22 books.…

From 2011 to 2012 I worked as a content creator for The Examiner, an online news site. It is a bit surreal to think that I will be a senior at Endicott College in the fall. It feels as if just yesterday that I was 17-years-old, applying to colleges and hoping that once I secured a face-to-face interview, that I would be able to explain why my grades suffered my freshman year of high school. I was hoping that once in an interview that a reputable college would take a chance on me, to take into consideration the bullying I endured, for me to showcase my academic abilities. Endicott was that school. In 2013, I graduated Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and never looked back.…

As a nine-year-old, I anticipated three days of the year: my birthday, Christmas, and the Scholastic Book Fair. Year after year, upon seeing the flimsy, cartoon-adorned catalog land on my desk displaying the date of the upcoming event, I did a mental (and, probably physical) happy dance. My mom’s checkbook could never keep up with my eager circling, highlighting, and squealing over every series, classic, and upcoming release. I remember 2007 especially well, that’s because of Andrew Clements.…

“This article examines thus the role of creative writing in understanding journalism. It argues that non-academic writing – poetry in this case – can play a much more significant part in journalism research than that of an entertaining genre for disseminating a study’s findings, mainly to audiences beyond academia” (Archetti). This is a whole article made just by contrasting two different methods of a subject. This same thing is being done in Twenge’s article and both are expertly done and adds great power to their…

During my high school career I have been actively involved within my school’s community through Mini-THON, school newspapers, SADD, and part time employment. Mini-THON has been predominant throughout my high school experience; I have been an active member of the Mini-THON committee for the past three years, following the footsteps of my grandparents, Gary and Millie Christ, who served on the Four Diamonds Advisory Board for over two decades. Being a part of this committee includes organizing fundraisers, and preparing and decorating for the annual Mini-THON. These tasks work toward having a special night that honors the Four Diamonds. The Four Diamonds Fund is dear to me, as many members of my community have been diagnosed with childhood cancer.…

I used to always read all time when I was younger, during dinner, free time or anywhere that I could possibly get a place to read. There was something about books to me when I was reading them, like video games but with books. For hours, I would just sit down and read until I was told to do something or until I was done with the book. For example, Geronimo Stilton, a series of books I loved when I was younger back in sixth grade, which I would sit down and finish 5 books in a matter of a few hours. Then I was introduced to no illustration books, which I was not cooperative with reading with until I read Rick Riordan’s books.…
