Leadership theories are tools that aim to define leadership with its elements and they carry a better grasp of this structure, help to build a successful one. During last 60 years a couple of main theories are developed. Advocates of these theories made hundreds of researches to build a criteria for successful leadership structure. But, unfortunately most of the studies has failed due to inconsistency of the results. However, two of these main four theories in leadership are behavioral and contingency theories.
The Behavioral Leadership Theory:The behavioral approach to leadership focuses on styles of leadership, such as autocratic or democratic.They try to differentiate behaviors of successful and unsuccessful leaders.

The Contingency Leadership Theory : With time both the traitist theory and the behavioral theory could not make a progress to build up a list for perfect leadership. Most of researchers today suggest that there is not an ideal leadership style which is right for all the situations. The contingency theory states that the right leadership style consists of some elements such as the leader-member relationship, the organizational culture,the followers. Some of these researchers accept the main factors of a leadership are (1) leader-member relations (2) position power; and (3) task structure.
The main difference between these two theories is behavioral leadership theory aims to build one best leadership type for all situations. However, contingency leadership theory advocates that it is not possible to describe one best leadership style for every situation.This theory suggests that different situations call for different characteristics, and there is not a specific profile of a leader to accept as general.
