Behavioral Counseling Course Analysis

This course of Introduction to Behavioral Counseling has been the most intriguing and challenging course I have taken so far. At the beginning of the course I believed that I couldn’t change anyone unless they are willing to change. Now, after learning about the three term consistency, I gained a new perspective on how to view that. The stories that were mentioned in class were also very useful because it gave a clearer understanding on how to handle certain behaviors. Meanwhile learning about behavior, I became more aware of my behaviors with people that I interact on a daily basis.
Although, the course was interesting it was challenging me in the goal aspect, now that we had to work on that goal and take data it was hard to adapt to the

Case Conceptualization Case conceptualization is typically initiated by the identification of the client’s problem. CBT’s view is that the problem lies within maladaptive cognitive processes (e.g. cognitive distortions and destructive, often times inaccurate, core beliefs) that lead to problematic behavioral outcomes. Once the problem has been identified, the etiology of the problem is explored. Within CBT the assumption is that learned cognitive constructs for which the client’s experiences are viewed through cause and maintain the results (e.g. anxiety, depression, etc.) of the client’s problems. Once this etiology has been mapped, appropriate CBT techniques and strategies can be selected and a therapeutic plan can be created.…

This course has taught me how to be more self-aware about what type of counselor I want to be and focus more on my values and accomplish what is important for me. This course also taught me how to be more flexible. Having a full-time job working 40 or more hours a week plus school; it was hard and still is, but having flexibility when I become a Mental Health Counselor will help me because I must be flexible to meet the client needs so we can establish a client/counselor relationship and maintain that relationship. Through this course, I learned about my professional identity, how to bring my personal values into Mental Health Counseling without losing myself, yet help the client without pushing my values on that person.…

In order for the therapy to begin and become effective, it’s vital to establish the rapport with the client. By building the therapeutic alliance the therapist can direct the client into achieving effective outcomes. Our role as therapists in a sense we have to become their teachers or guides in their eyes. We need to be perceived as knowledgeable and highly skilled in our profession. In order for a change in therapy to be progressive, we will not allow the client to spend a profuse amount of time reflecting in their past or being sidetracked about their symptoms.…

Behavioral skills training consists of, instructions, modeling, rehearsal and feedback in order to teach people new skills (Miltenberger, 2016). In the Bible, we can find the best example of behavioral skills training with Jesus and his disciples. Jesus’ entire life on Earth consisted of behavioral skills training, especially his lesson on love. In John 13:34 Jesus instructs his disciples to, “love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (New Revised Standard Version).…

Melanie Klein believed that human beings' core conflict is one of love(hate) and good (bad); the earlier ones as presence and latter ones as absence (Professor Brizman, course slide). The paranoid-schizoid is the splitting of good and bad and there is no ambivalence in this position. However, the human experience to identify good and bad is ambivalent for the reason that a state of mind is an emotional experience which it isn't just one state of mind but with many. Learning itself too is an emotional situation, for example, my learning this Adolescent Development course has been an emotional experience.…

Throughout the semester, I had found this class challenging especially with the post lab reports. I found the post labs difficult because there was so much to write and mention. If I had gotten one part of the lab wrong, a lot of my results and labeled parts of the graphs would be wrong as well. In order to make this class successful, I found myself starting the post labs as soon as I got out of lab when it was fresh in my memory. Writing up the post labs was very time consuming so starting earlier was a smart idea for me considering that I have other work from different classes as well.…

I recently participated in a college course, Introduction to Psychology, at Misericordia University this past year. Taking this course has taught me to expand my comfort zone by interacting with students whom I would not normally associate with, and consider various ideas and opinions from other individuals. This course has also taught me that it is essential to communicate with teachers and classmates, as they often have different viewpoints and can help make improvements, whether it is to help you academically or as a person in general. During my stay at Misericordia University, there were times I had missed a few classes and unfortunately fell behind. Thankfully, my professor and classmates were more than happy to assist by sending the information I missed and explaining the details I did not understand.…
