Introduction Functional Communication Training (FCT) “develops alternative behaviors that are sensitive to the EOs that maintain the problem behavior” (Cooper et al., p.497); EOs are establishing operations and FCT does not seek to change EOs. FCT uses differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA) because FCT interventions help the participant to create an alternative form of communication as an antecedent to the previous problem behavior. The DRA of communication provides the reinforcer that has maintained the problem behavior (screaming, falling to the floor), which provides extinction of the problem behavior and a replacement behavior that contains the same reinforcement. “FCT can be viewed as an application of mand training”…

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

Conclusion Autism a developmental disorder with no cure is constantly increasing. Families who discover their child to have autism tend to seek aid from two widely used comprehensive intervention, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped Children (TEACCH). Introduction “The image often evoked to describe autism is that of a beautiful child in a glass shell.” (Schopler, E., Mesibov, G., 1995) For decades many parents have clung to this notion, of hoping that one day a means might be found to break the invisible barrier. Thus far, no cure has been found. Perhaps the time has come for the image to be shattered. Perhaps the time has come to concentrate, rather, on understanding the minds of the autistic.…

There are many ways teachers can educate children in ‘visual literacy,’ this can be done by introducing still and moving texts such as, tables, graphs, photos, videos and movies to name a few. One example of a teaching method to assist in visual literacy would be, giving children a stack of plain white cards and asking them to create a still picture onto each card to create a story. The teacher would show an example of their own, so there is no confusion, such as individual cards of a dog jumping higher and higher on each card, eventually catching a Frisbee but on the last card it would show the dog landing and tumbling over. The teacher would give the students time to draw their own individual stories and then when finished, jumbling the students…

Globalization is defined as the process in which things from one culture or people group is spread to other cultures and people groups around the world. As this idea grows (Giroux, Jah, & Eloundou-Enyegue 2010), so too does the need for foreign languages to reach classrooms in different countries. English taught in a classroom, outside of the United States, is no exception. However, globalization is not the only growing branch of education. Technology is also a key part of education that seems to be gaining steam (Crump & Twyford, 2010).…
