Truancy is a problem that can have negative effects on people’s futures. It is known to be drawn to behaviours such as drugs, alcohol and violence (Garry, 1996). The behaviour chosen to conduct is Truancy or skipping class. The operational definition being used is absences where the student themselves indicated would be unacceptable and have no legitimate reason to be absent (Reid, 2015). Absences where excuses such as waking up late, not wanting to feel like going or the pressure of friends wanting to gather and engage in leisure activities are considered unacceptable absences. Reid (2004) mentions that the persistent absents was due to a combination of social, psychological and institutional factors. Majority of students that truant seem to be individuals that enjoy the idea of being isolated. However this observation has changed since the increase of bullying, delinquency and disruptive behaviour (Reid, 2004). Truancy was blamed on the reflection of student’s life at home. There have been studies that observed the cause of truancy at home is caused by the lack of discipline skills among parents and the effects of the participation of local communities as well as individual schools. They discovered truancy to be worse with mainly working-class students that had issues with their personal, family, school and community. Personal issues included aspects of lack of social skills, confidence, academics, concentration and self-management skills (Reid, 2015). As well as aspects of truancy within a family environment that parents ignored absences, not valuing education, domestic problems, inconsistent or inadequate parenting, and economic dispossession. Also within the community which revolved around housing, local attitudes, culture, criminality, vandalism and a sense of feeling safe (Reid, 2015).
