When providing instructions also a teacher aide needs to be mindful of student´s ability to see them and resources, student´s ability to hear them, individual learning styles, leaving room for questions, providing the student with resources, equipment or worksheet before and after instructions.
Prefacing requests with “Thank you” has a marked effect on how the request is received. “Thank you for putting your bag on the hook” or “Thank you for dropping your rubbish in the bin” would be examples that I heard. The trust in the student that this statement implies, combined with the clarification of the expectation, often results in immediate action without protest.
