By planning multiple activities throughout the day, I hoped this would ensure I would be too exhausted to stay up late. The previous night, I arranged for my alarm to sound off at three different times, hours before I typically awaken. I also avoided taking naps throughout that day, unless my health was poor. Keeping myself active throughout the day helps distract me from any feelings of fatigue during light hours and cause exhaustion at night. As someone who suffers from chronic pain, getting out of bed some days can be a challenge in itself. To encourage myself to get out of bed and become active, I would begin to remind myself that no matter where I am, I will still be in pain. But by getting out of bed and accomplishing things I would like to do, I am diverting my attention outside the pain I feel. It was critical for me to remind myself of the harm having an improper sleeping schedule has on my health for me to incorporate this behavior as a permanent
