Special Education Meeting Reflection

? I was very excited about this colloquium because I knew that co-teaching was rising all over the country, however, I did not know what my role was going to be as a general education educator. I was a bit perplexed on why there was a panel at this colloquium, but the audience did not really get to ask the panel members any questions. I guess I expected more talking from the panel members, and less introductions and questions from one member of the SOE. Nevertheless, I would say that the Venn diagram activity that we did near the end of this “meeting” was quite insightful and sadly answered more of my questions than the panel was able to answer. With that being said, I would say that this activity also lead me to having more questions, which …show more content…
Unfortunately, I feel like this presentation was more teacher focused than learner focused, due to the fact that an SOE member was the one asking the panel questions, and not the audience. Even though, the presentation was not set up how I thought it should be, I liked how the Venn diagram helped to visually explain the role of the general education and the special education teachers in a co-teaching environment.
So What? One aspect of this meeting that I fond very helpful was the fact that each member of the panel had had different experiences with co-teaching and that each experience helped them become more professional co-teachers. It was wonderful to have three people who represented the three different educational facilities (elementary, middle, and

I have all of these plans of including my special education teacher in every activity, however, what would I do if the special education teacher did not want to work with “my” students but only wanted to work with “her” students? How would I approach this situation in a respectful and professional manner? This question was not ever brought up in the panel discussion, however, I believe that one of the panel members would have responded in this way: If you have a special education teacher who does not want to help teach the whole class, you make your whole class more welcoming and inviting, letting this co-worker know that you respect their credentials and that you want to help them support their students. They may also have replied by saying that acting like you run the show is only going to make your special education teacher want to retreat, but if you kindly push them to present a mini lesson, or just work with a small group of mixed students, that they will slowly become more comfortable working with you and all of your

My favorite part about this class was the, Who am I websites. I enjoyed listening and learning about everybody's life. We have way too much in common our foods, music, lifestyles, families, friends religious, career goals, and etc. Although, I still believe a couple of students didn’t receive the unity messages. Learning about socioeconomic status, race, religion, and cultures were all significant.…

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

While reading “Using Collaboration, Co-Teaching, and Question Answer Relationships to Enhance Content Area Literacy” by Nicole Fenty, I had a chance to learn about some strategies that can be used while co-teaching with a Special Education teachers and a general education teacher. Collaboration is the key to success in a general education setting where there are students who have an IEP because the teachers need to be on the same page of what the students need to learn while Co-Teaching. It is important that each teacher shares the responsibility of teaching the students. This sharing of responsibility allows for teachers to become more knowledgeable in their subjects which, allows them to teach the areas they know the best. Being knowledgeable…

Today marked the last meeting before its wheels up for Nashville. We all convened at a West Contra Costa Unified School District Board meeting to thank the Board members for their support of the ILC and let them know just how excited we are. The meeting also gave us an opportunity to stand up before our community and represent not only ourselves but the Ivy League Connection as a whole. In the weeks leading up to the meeting, Don let us know that one representative from each cohort would be speaking to the Board of Education, but they would have to be pretty speedy as we were only allotted 5 minutes in total. On the Vanderbilt side, Hawi volunteered to be our speaker, and Shreejal did the same for Chicago.…

On Thursday October 5th, I was invited to participate in an IEP team meeting as the regular education teacher. This student has down syndrome, identified at birth, and is receiving services as intellectually disabled. This student is in a self-contained classroom therefore, his current teacher served as the special education teacher for the purposes of this meeting. The following people attended this meeting: Mrs. Katherine Fields (ARC Advocate), Dr. Neiman (Main speech therapist, over the phone), Mrs. Bennett (LEA representative), Mrs. Diggs (ACS EC Director, as a precaution because the parents expressed that they were not happy), Mrs. Sikes (Regular Education), Mrs. Bernard (Special Education Teacher), Mrs. Liles (Speech therapist),…

Her accommodations are the same for all of her classes, and they include extra time, cues, prompts, and a use of a calculator in math. The mother agreed with everything created on the IEP and really was just stressing about how she wanted her daughter to continue trying her hardest. Throughout the meeting, the general education teacher was not very involved at all. I think she was just there as a representative of one of her teachers, but from my understanding, she is new. I felt as if she didn`t say much, maybe because she didn’t exactly know what to say.…

While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents: • Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010). • Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010). • Respect the private nature of the special…

Special education is in every school system to help students with disabilities have success in life. According to Artiles and colleagues research, children back in the 1800s were excluded from educational opportunities (Artiles, Harris-Murri, and Rostenberg, 2006, p. 260). Children with disabilities were often segregated into either a separate classroom or separate schools with curriculum that didn’t fit their needs (Artiles, 2006, p. 260). Children were held to low standards, but fortunately that is not the way we see special education today. With the introduction of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act otherwise known in IDEA in 2004 we see more of a movement towards inclusion (Department of Education, 2004).…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

My practicum experience in this class was quite an interesting one. I didn 't know how it was going to work, but quickly saw it was easy to figure out. I did have a few mishaps because of the way my resource class operate, I often have to change my whole lesson at the last minute. So even though I have written a lesson plan and scripted it out, it is usually geared towards their IEP goals or missing basic skills they need, when I see most of my students not getting something in class I chose to focus on what they need…

Each session taught me a something I could take to back to the classroom. The one I enjoyed the most was the first session. In particular, I appreciated not only the ideas of a variety of strategies but how easily they can be adapted towards our own teaching styles and goals but the idea that all these strategies need to be backed up with best practice teaching and instruction. Its one thing to have all the glitter and glamour that tech can provide but are we continually being intentionally and purposeful with the tasks we are…
