Before I Fall By Henry Oliver

Decent Essays
As I read Before I Fall, the aspect of the story that mattered the most to the author, Lauren Oliver, was an event story. In the novel the plot would keep coming back to one event, every morning Sam would wake up to the same day she lived the day before, this happened for 7 days. Lauren Oliver engaged me into this story by adding suspense and mystery, and I kept wanting to read more to figure out what would happen next, she used descriptive words when she was explaining important details about the book. Firstly, the author uses an event story to reveal the plot because it really helps understand what's going on in Sam's life, during the 7 days she relived. The event makes Sam realize a lot about her, the events changed Sams outlook

Author of nonfiction book “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall”, Anne Fadiman relays the questions to her readers in her preface: “What makes a good parent?” and “What makes a good doctor?” As far as anyone is concerned for the latter question, specifically what makes outstanding health care, Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, of the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality would describe quality health care as simply “getting the right care to the right patient at the right time – every time” (). Furthermore, she dissects this simplistic description apart, providing a multilayered perspective. Essentially, the key to quality health care is its three basic dimensions: STRUCTURE, PROCESS, and OUTCOME” ().…

Racism is embedded into essentially every American institution and is nurtured by people who have racist predispositions. Ta-Nehisi Coates in Between the World and Me, writes “the ground we walked was trip-wired. The air we breathed was toxic. The water stunted our growth. We could not get out” (Coates, p. 28).…

After reading Hills Like White Elephants to be honest I was greatly confused. Looking up literary commentary I found a wide stretch of articles from abortion to gender arguments. To me while there is plenty of evidence for both and pages of arguments to draw from I cannot do it. Reading over the paper again three or four times I have come to a sad conclusion.…

I have so many different thoughts and opinions about this book. I started out loving Has to Be Love, was super conflicted in the middle, but thought the ending was pretty spectacular. Like I said, conflicted. Our narrator, Clara, was rather frustrating to read about because she was so torn between what decisions to make about particular things, but she was a truthful character (to us at least). Reading Clara's justifications for wanting certain things made me more interested in the story and what would eventually happen…

“ Let us be firm, pure and faithful; at the end of our sorrow, there is the greatest glory of the world, that of the men who did not give in.” stated Charles de Gaulle. This perfectly connects to the book Black Radishes because of the narrative writing technique that the author uses to captivate the reader. She illustrates that just because you are different doesn't mean that you should be treated any differently. Gustave was brought up in the bustling city of Paris, but right before Germany took over Paris, Gustave and his family got out to a countryside named Saint-Georges. Facing all the things that new kids face as well as an anti-Semitic bully at school was as you would expect it to be.…

Within her poem, “The Walls Do Not Fall”, H.D. implies that there is a creator that works within the natural world of the shell-fish. This forms the concept that there is a sort of deity embedded within the poem that oversees the creation. In the poem, H.D. continually uses the image of the builder as a representation of the artistic self as a form of creative power. This pattern of images suggests that there is an innate power in the artist to create tangible things that have powerful effects on society. The transfer of power onto the individual is set up within the poem through the suggestion of a god-like figure, the language of art, as well as the concept of self-creation.…

Paula Hawkins has created contemporary novel, The Girl On The Train, which has solidified her place as a good author. When read and evaluated through the eyes of Victor Nabokov, I could find different ways Hawkins proves she is a storyteller, teacher and enchanter. With her diligent use of suspense and detail, along with the use of multiple unreliable perspectives, Hawkins puts readers through a psychological game of critical thinking. The farther into the story you get, the more questions you raise and that is how she is able to keep you on your toes and engrossed in her fictional world.…

After viewing the short film “Our time is up” by Rob Pearlstein, I was able to place the five components of the plot structure diagram as presented in theatre class. The five plot structure is, exposition, inciting event, raising event, climax, and falling action. The exposition is the beginning of the plot, it sets the foundational background of the main character or the story. At the opening of the story, you see a time clock set, an immaculate environment where everything is not just clean but ordered.…

The frame novel format of Woman At Point Zero conforms to the typical characteristics for this structure. Frame novels follow a “story within a story” format where the embedded narratives, the more emphasized part of the story, provide context for the main narratives (the introductory outside frame of the story). The first narrative will usually set the scene for the second narrative, which is commonly the more emphasize, important part of the frame set up. Woman at point zero follows this format to provide explanation for the effect that the body of this story has on the framing narrative through suspense and inciting ominous curiosity. The conforming characteristics of Woman At Point Zero to those of frame novels provide purpose for the novel…
