Beowulf
Beowulf is an epic poem that revolves around several battles between Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s mother and a dragon. Beowulf is an epic hero that is subjected to fate and cannot escape his mortality. He is the leader of the Geats and is characterized as a mighty, powerful, and bold warrior. He also becomes fearful of death towards the end and is worried when encountering certain battles. With this in mind, he displays these characteristics several times throughout the poem by resolving the conflicts he had with Grendel, Grendel’s’ mother and the dragon.

It also shows how he is a bold warrior by facing Grendel with no weapons to fight with. Keep in mind, Grendel is a powerful demon who is blood thirsty and jealous for not being able to be a part of the Danes’ community that takes place in Heorot. He is an outcast of God and Hrothgar does not hand out wealth to him. With that being said, his purpose is to cause chaos and destroy the community by not allowing Hrothgar and the Danes to have fun, sing, drink and socialize with others. Grendel disrupts the events that are planned but never take place for 12 years. Unfortunately, Hrothgar has had enough and depends on Beowulf to put an end to all the chaos. In the poem Hrothgar claims “Beowulf, my friend, you have traveled here to favor us with help and to fight for us” (Beowulf 900). Apparently, Hrothgar has known Beowulf from times before and knew he would put an end to the confusing Grendel is causing. As mentioned earlier, Grendel is a powerful monster, but Beowulf is just as powerful. During their battle, Grendel realizes that Beowulf is stronger than any man he has ever encountered. She goes to Heorot while the Danes are asleep and attacks them. She even kidnaps one of Hrothgar best men and cuts off his head. To end the rampage of Grendel’s mom, Beowulf must fight her to resolve the issues. Unlike in the first battle, he wears his armor and Unferth’s sword tracks down Grendel’s mom. As they battle, Beowulf grips her shoulders and pitches her to the floor. Even though she retaliates, Beowulf still puts up a fight because he is wearing his war-gear. Although Beowulf is powerful and mighty he also experiences hard times throughout the poem and is not afraid to admit it. Beowulf admitted that he “barley survived the battle under water. It was a hard-fight” (Beowulf 928). The battles that have taken place also show how Beowulf is a good dependable leader because he always come through for Hrothgar and the Danes whenever there is an
