Beethoven Symphony No. 5

Improved Essays
The instrumental musical piece from the Classical Period that I chose to discuss this week is Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 Second Movement: Andante con moto, composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. This instrumental musical piece forms part of the larger multi-movement Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67. Beethoven is one of my favorite Classical Period composers and the entire multi-movement Symphony No. 5 has been one of my absolute favorites ever since I first listened to it years ago. While this musical piece is one of my favorites, I had to listen to it several times in order to answer the discussion for this week. The Second Movement is the longest of the four movements and consists of two themes, three variations, a middle segment, and

Symphony is a multi-movement instrumental work for an orchestra originating from the Italian Sinfonia, which was an instrumental prelude to large-scale vocal works such as opera and oratorio. Sinfonia comprises of 3 movements written at the tempo sequence of fast- slow fast. According to Dr. Nolan Gasser, the new trend of adopting opera sinfonia for concert use emerged in the 1720s and 30s and soon, composers such as Giovanni Battista Sammartini and Johann Stamitz began composing symphonies as an independent work. Three symphonies from Johann Stamitz, Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven will be used in this paper to compare four elements –movement structure, length of the first movement, instrumentation and the compositional techniques used…

When listening to any piece by Beethoven, you receive the whole range of emotions, and the Fifth Symphony is no different. Just the first four notes, a simple da-da-da-dum, is enough to send shivers up your back. Packed with all the furious confidence of Beethoven, it suggests scarlet eruptions, heavenly processions and all the powers human drama. These four notes started the memorable first movement.…

I would have to disagree, as I do not find Liszt to be "underrated". Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony may be the one everyone seems to prefer more often than usual, but that does not mean it is far more engaging than Liszt’s transcription. Each one has its strengths and faults. Beethoven manages to express the heroic proportions to it; while Liszt, compared to the full orchestral version, manages to work very well in adding a greater lyrical quality to the work on the piano.…

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most well-known symphonies ever written. The first movement is “fast with vigor”. The introduction is somewhat deceiving because it does not feel fast. The smoothness of it allows the listener to sit back and forget how quickly the music is progressing. It is not until the first half cadence from V/V to V that the listener feels how dynamic the movement is.…

Each movement has a story of it, such as Beethoven with his symphonies and movements. This music tells a story of an artist’s obsession with a woman he adores and whose wild imagination and opium-induced hallucinations takes us through his dreams and passions. It was relaxing during playing this symphony and it’s one of my favorite symphony; I picked this concert because of this piece. The Symphonie…

The piece that I choice was Susato: Three Dances. Three Dance is a medieval Renaissance dance song. I chose this piece because, unlike the others one this piece was not an a cappella. This song is actually the opposite and has no one singing in it. When I listen to it does not make me want to dance, but it does make me tap my foot.…

This piece started with a soft dynamic. The tempo was slow, and the pitch was low that gave me relaxing and sleeping at the beginning of this piece. It was very smooth. The scale was minor, so it made me feel like this piece was telling a sad love story. It gave me a different mood than I heard “The Sonata No.5 in F major, Opus 24, Spring” of Beethoven.…

As I walked into the Brechemin Auditorium I was immediately mesmerized by the stage. I took my seat and instantly took notice of the crimson curtain and the Grand black piano shining in the spotlight. The auditorium was much smaller than I had expected, but it created an intimacy between the musicians and audience that was necessary for the performances. During Introduction and Variations on ‘Trockne Blumen,’ D.802, I could hear the pages of sheet music turn and the breaths that the flute player would take during her performance. I was completely in awe of how beautiful the flute looked, glistening in its gold color under the spotlight as the flutist would slightly bob around when playing.…

Berlioz choosing the Must path was probably difficult, because he went against his mother’s wishes and disappointed her by choosing music. Berlioz continued anyways, and went on to create one of the greatest symphonies of all time: “Symphonie Fantastique.” This changed the game for how symphonies were written. Normally, there is four movements, but Berlioz put five movements in. That at the time, was unheard of when he began writing…

The piece performed that I picked is “Variations on Magic Flute for Cello & Piano” composed by Beethoven. The piece has andante tempo that is peaceful. The performers, Wei Yu and Pauline Martin, played only the first through even variations of the whole piece Beethoven composed. The piece starts off with a slow tempo and soft dynamics. In the melody, the piano leads and the cello harmonizes, there are a few parts within this piece that the cello becomes silent and the piano has its own solo.…

The Symphony is originally composed of four parts; moderato, allegretto, largo and allegro. The beginning of the concert opens slowly with emotions running deep and meaningful with short tempo spikes to surprise and evoke nervousness, then bring you back to your seat in forgiving consonant intervals. A piano, French horns and trumpets bring a dark concerned, uneasy feeling of urgency as the violins and basses run away with the tempo. Symbols and drums take me back to an earlier revolutionary period with a rhythmic beat almost portraying strides leading up to a battle.…

1 in D major, “Titan,” was performed next. It was much longer in duration than the first piece. It showed uniqueness in that it incorporated everyday sounds into the music, such as bulge calls, bird songs, and dance tunes, which provided for a very wide variety of tone colors. The symphony began with a thick-textured undertone in the strings and a two-note “hunting call” in the woodwinds, which persisted throughout the piece. Also present was a bright fanfare in the trumpets, followed by a light descending melody played by the entire orchestra.…

Concert Report Two The concert performance given live that I have attended on Thursday April 20th, 2017 was an organ licentiate recital by Ian Guenette. It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…
