The song also brings out a heroic and celebratory mood. The song was released shortly after Beethoven had lost his hearing ability. He said that “it shall not bend or break me completely,” which relate directly to his music which he describes the struggle as “fate” which “knocks at the door.” This song is kind of a narrative which he uses to show he’s a hero. The heroic life struggle is described in the opening of the song in C minor to the transition to C major as the song comes to an end which shows a progression of emotions.…

I intend to write an essay concerning the third movement of Luciano Berio’s Symphony. The Symphony was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in commemoration of its 125th anniversary and was premiered in the following year. The fifth movement was added to the work after the first performance, and was premiered in 1970. Inspired by Gustav Mahler and Charles Yves, Berio creates the third movement as a great collage, quoting fragments of diverse musical works. These fragments erupt from the third movement of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, which is used as a carrier wave.…

The last movement had five instruments performing. Nikolas Valinsky and Matthew Chanlynn played the trumpet, Emelie Pfaff played the horn, William Gamache played the trombone, and Heather Ewer played the tuba. The melody was more complex because this piece of music would constantly shift between what instrument was holding the melody. However, the tuba held the melody majority of the time. Most of the time, the tuba acted as the base throughout the piece.…

As I am watching piano recitals played by different performances, I realize that each person has his or her own strength, and they also have many characteristics in common at the same time, such as concentration, professionalism of performance and so on. After I watched all five piano recitals, I know that it is important for a piano beginner to learn their skills, body movements and emotions. In the Bach's Italian Concerto, BWV 971 played by Andras Schiff, there are three movements with different tempos, such as Allegro, Andante, and Presto. Each movement contains different dynamics.…

In the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony it reflects Beethoven’s personal battle raging inside himself as he fought against his own emotions writing the composition. The piece starts out with the exposition exploiting the thirst theme with the well-known four notes often used on television. The theme varies from a soft, piano melody to a pounding almost “frustrated” forte notes. With the constant shifts it is easy to hear the internal conflict between two strong feelings: contentment and anger. Throughout the course of this part of the exposition I personally feel conflict, whether it be internal or external.…

Specifically, in the A key (Grove, 1896). The middle section is indeed played on the flute which is said to add to a “romantic” feeling with “swift and unexpected changes and contrasts, exciting the imagination to the highest degree” (Grove, 1896). I would believe this is most prominently shown during the transition between the first and second parts as I mentioned earlier. Another similarity to what I thought and what is also described by Grover is that there is a change from loud to soft in volume (Grove, 1896). David Lidov indicates that this piece is in fact in the ternary form as I had thought, while also mentioning that the piece is played with the allegretto…
