Listening Assignment 6: Melody: Phrase, Motive, Tune Noticing details in the melody, such as the phrase, motive, and tune isn’t always an easy task, but what a better way to practice and get better at it than by listening to a piece by Beethoven. Beethoven’s Symphony no. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 proved to be another masterpiece in orchestra, as many recognized it due to something known as the four-note opening motif. Listening more to it people heard the twice a descending sequence; furthermore, “Allegro con Brio” would be the first movement from the symphony’s sonata form. Many considered the motif as that of apprehensive, but yet successful as the piece expanded throughout the orchestra. It seemed the first theme would grow as it overlapped

    I would have to disagree, as I do not find Liszt to be "underrated". Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony may be the one everyone seems to prefer more often than usual, but that does not mean it is far more engaging than Liszt’s transcription.
