Many people mistake Beethoven for being born in Germany however he in fact was not born in Germany. Germany was not even a country at the time! Beethoven was from Bonn, which was a city in The Electorate of Cologne. It was one of the largest areas of land that the Holy Roman Empire had. During Beethoven’s time, it was slowly dying off. Beethoven despised the Holy Roman Empire and was very pleased with that fact. Oddly enough it was Napoleon who was getting rid of the Empire. It was a big reason why Beethoven based his piece off of Napoleon. Napoleon did soon after finish and end the Holy Roman Empire. Alas, he soon became a tyrant and Beethoven was disgusted as mentioned above. If the funeral march was about the Holy Roman Empire, then it would make sense having a “happy” sound as Beethoven was not a fan of the Empire. However why would the piece be sad? The movement would seemingly be triumphant and glorious as the Holy Roman Empire ebbed away. That is not the case though for the whole movement
