Beethoven’s life is generally divided into three creative periods. Give the dates and major works of each, and briefly characterize the features of Beethoven’s style during each period.
The first period in Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770-1827) life was from his birth in 1770 to 1802. During this time he composed many piano sonatas, simply because it was his primary instrument. Beethoven’s composing style was influenced mostly by his teacher Joseph Haydn, but also by Wolfgang Mozart and Muzio Clementi. Sonate Pathetique is one of Beethoven’s most popular pieces. He began studying under Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) in 1792. Haydn, having been a classicist, taught Beethoven in the same manner, which caused Beethoven’s first period of compositions to lean more toward the Classical style of Haydn and Mozart. Haydn was typically busy composing his own pieces, causing Beethoven to become dissatisfied with his teacher. Beethoven put all of his time and energy in trying to be a father to young Karl. Because Beethoven never married or had children, Karl was the only heir to carry on the Beethoven name. Beethoven felt that Karl needed to be a musician; therefore, he had Karl placed in multiple schools and had him take music lessons from Carl Czerny, but Karl had no musical talent.
