Beef Genetics Have you ever had a cow or bull that you just did not want to deal with? I’m talking about an animal that has that aggressive nature that tears down your fences, hard to handle, and just full of problematic tendencies. What if I told you there was a way that you could eliminate this trait from your herd, as well as making better genetic decisions that would increase the amount of net profit you, as a cattle producer could earn. That is what I would like to talk to you about today. I have a very small cattle production that I am trying to build. I am growing into my herd and want to make the best informed decisions possible to enhance the production and marketability of my animals. A genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA; that is saying that every cell in it’s body will contain a copy of the 2.8 billion DNA base pairs that make up the genome. Angus genetics have continued to the way for the beef industry throughout the years. Angus Genetic Incorporated has been taking the genetics even farther by researching ways to single out specific traits for herd improvement to determine the absolute best Angus Genetics that exist. There is genetic testing for our herd improvement as well. The Zoetis High Density 50 K for Genomic-Enhanced-Expected Progeny Differences (GE-EPD’s) and dollar indexes is used to evaluate the registered genetics of the Angus breed. It allows a more accurate account of the GE-EPD’s of young Black Angus Bulls, Heifers without progeny, daughters, or carcass information. It expands the genetic predictions of traits such as heifer pregnancies, dry matter intake, and tenderness. Ultimately it provides a way to find the perfect sire match for the Gene Max tested progeny. This program levels the playing field for small breeding operations like mine.
