Beechworth's Short Story: The Haunted House

Wake up!! my mom shouted. I had raced out of bed to find men standing at the door asking for me.
“Margaret Shailer, is Margaret Shailer here?” the men asked. “What is the matter?” my mother had asked.
“It’s time for her to serve her years” the man that was as tall as a giant had said. As my mother burst into tears I ran into my bedroom and threw on my hunting jacket, and dashed out the back door to the woods.

Many days would I journey through these woods, hunting for my family, to keep food on the table. Today was different I had walked so far I hadn’t noticed the strange fog gathering at my feet. A thick blanket of fog had covered the ground which made it impossible to retrace my steps. Deeper and deeper I went into the forest until I could no longer see my own feet. Soon I had ventured back to the house to see the men still there waiting for me, but I knew exactly what was to come of me.

I would become a maid for the richest family in town, the Beechworth’s. They had horrible children, they were bratty, mean, and ignorant, As for the adults too. As for that day I was to pack and get any valuables that I thought were needed for my living in the Beechworth’s presence. The next day, I arose sleeping in a car with men at either side of

If I did one thing wrong like fold a blanket wrong or leave a fingerprint on a mirror I would be punished, which entailed beatings and sleeping outside in the cold. After that I quickly learned what to do and what not to do. At times I would steal the chocolates from the bowls in the kitchen and I knew they would eventually find out, but I persisted on chocolate, and disgusting porridge.
