In Sue Monk Kidd’s, The Secret Life of Bees, the author indirectly characterizes Lily Owens as insecure to display her longing to fit in. For example, this insecurity can be seen when Lily looks at the picture of her deceased mother, Deborah. “I laid the photograph beside my eighth-grade picture and examined every possible similarity. She was more or less missing a chin, too, but even so, she was above-average pretty, which offered me some genuine hope for my future” (Kidd 13).…

The Influence of Literature Banning books for specific ages should be supported to prevent youths from being exposed to harmful content. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, as well as other sources, include several incidents that impact both children and adolescents in a negative way. Reducing the amount of literature that is available for young aged children can positively influence their behavior in any situation. Although The Secret Life of Bees exhibits the freedom of speech and tools for learning, it should be banned from high school curricula because it includes an abundant number of abusive arguments with foul language throughout the novel that children should not be exposed to.…

Robots have been something scientists have been talking about for years with the present being a very big advancement in research. Harvard has made a “robobee” prototype that hasn't been perfected yet. While they are still an estimated 10 years away from a successful bunch, the robobees would function much like regular bees with the ability to pollinate whole crops, communicate, and make simple-decisions. This would be the ideal solution to the slow extinction of bees but even the scientists that are in the process of making the robotic bees have doubts, “We do not see robotic pollination as a wise or viable long-term solution to Colony Collapse Disorder. If robots were used for pollination, it would only be as a stop-gap measure while a solution…

Extensions of the Honey Bees Honeybees help produce 35% of all food in the world and have been around for millions of years. Yet, in recent decades, the honeybee population has been decreasing dramatically. On average a beekeeper will report 20% of annual losses, up to 90% on some occasions. Researchers have found that several factors have been causing the decrease in the honeybee population; a loss of habitat, introduction of new chemicals into the ecosystem, increase in the hive size and the rapid spread of diseases. Loss of Habitat…

Looking at both stories that uses the element of allusion is that they both similarly show that when humans started to command the robots what they wanted them do they both refuse their orders and does only what they wanted to do. For instance, in the story “The Veldt” when George commands the nursery room to display the theme of Aladdin, it responds only in silence which is mysterious because the nursery room was programmed to play an image that a human would think in their mental brain. Also in the story “Reason” Cutie was also programmed to follow what Donovan and Powell say based on the second law of robotics which is to and unquestionably listen to what a person tells them to do.…

A.I Artificial Intelligence, a film by Steven Spielberg, tells the Pinocchio-esque story of David, a robotic boy who goes on a journey, in search of a Blue Fairy, so that he can become a real boy and earn the love of Monica, his human mother. Dealing with the idea of artificial intelligence and the question of whether or not a machine can have a mind, this film touches on the philosophy of John. R Searle - whose main thought experiment, The Chinese Room, argues that no matter how a computer acts, there is no way that the computer could have the mind or consciousness to understand what it outputs; a computer is nothing more than a machine that is able to act out its programming. Although this movie was thoroughly entertaining and is absolutely…
