When I woke up Sunday morning I observed the snow-bound city. It was particularly cooler in New York than Pittsburgh but it wasn't anything I wasn't accustomed to. Knowing I wouldn't have much time before I was stripped of my freedom, I pondered on my future. It was already late in the day so instead of going into mental dismay I began to prepare breakfast. That afternoon I was greeting by a Freshman from Yale University. Shawn was his name. I was particularly intrigued by his presence. He had such an intelligent demeanor that kept me extremely interested in his words. We conversed for several hours before going to dinner. He wanted to show me the night part of New York so he took me to the fanciest restaurant in town. I immediately intimidated by the beating eyes as I walked in. I had never experienced being in extravagant environments. I felt thrust into a predicament to preform in such a way I was not accustomed to. While looking through the menu I saw such lavish dishes I never knew existed. I had finally settled down and began to tell Shawn about myself. “I was raised in a middle class neighborhood that I greatly despised, and that I was generally disliked at school due to my defiance”, I said. “But I did have an outlet though, it was my job at the theater”. …show more content…
Instead we went to the nearest casino. With all the bank checks I had we were able to spend a substantial amount of money.
After many hours of champagne and many casino games we went to the nearest club. While making our way to the club I felt a feeling of satisfaction. I was happy I could experience the high life for once in my life. I had put aside my feelings of living in a middle class and began to put on the label of a high class man. For the first time I felt like somebody

“The book’s that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame”. This quote by Oscar Wilde encapsulates the idea that texts often highlight issues or ideas prominent in our current society, regardless of the time, place or context of the text. Texts address important issues within our society and facilitate deeper thought and reflection about these ideas. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, set in the distant future, ideas relevant to us in the present world are conveyed by author Ray Bradbury. Short story The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury similarly presents ideas applicable to our current day society.…

As a fiction writer, it is fitting that the narrator in Tobias Wolff’s Old School creates his most elaborate story about himself. As the lower-class, half-Jewish scholarship boy at a mid-century elite boarding school, it is understandable that he is insecure of his position in the school’s social hierarchy. At his school, Jewish kids are discriminated against, and rather than group himself into social humiliation, he chooses to adopt a new personality, joining the ranks of the many upper-class Catholics. By choosing competition over friendship, abandoning his heritage for the opinions of a group to which he does not belong and hiding his status as a scholarship boy by adopting the mannerisms of the upper-class, the narrator distances himself from both his friends and his own identity, compromising and losing…

Although the location of my study areas vary, I decided to choose the one where the majority of studying is done which is in my bedroom on the bed. The set up of the area will include surrounding myself with textbooks, two laptaps (one for note taking, the other for research), different colors pens, a notebook, snacks and of course my cell phone. While studying I normally have the television on but its muted. For the purpose of the reaction paper I thought it would be more accurate to have someone observe my actions.…

Every kid wants to experiment when they are younger. Some of us just seem to make a massive mess when we do it. Of course our parents always tell us that we should be careful not to stain our carpets with anything, and that is where I made my mistake. I was sitting in my room bored with nothing to do. May I remind you that this is not a good thing for a seven year old to be doing.…

Of all the exhibits, the “hate room” was my favorite. I learned more information about the artifacts in that room than the artifacts in any other room. I learned from the other rooms, but it wasn’t anything I didn’t have a general idea of. In the “hate room,” I saw how racial stereotyping influenced advertising. The first thing that caught my eye was the black cast iron banks.…

It was a cold summer night and I could see the sun setting over the lake as I was arranging the lawn chairs around the campfire. I tried to dodge the clouds of gnats as I was running back and forth getting all the cards, snacks, and music ready. Just as I finished I saw the thirty teenagers walking up the long path to the camp directors house ready to participate in an evening activity I planned for them. I watched the girls race to get seats on the lawn chairs and helped the others find seats so they didn’t have to sit on the wet grass. The girls were laughing and having fun…

It was 11:45 pm, we had the car packed, the moving truck loaded and on its way, and all of our goodbyes said to our family and friends, and set out to our new home in Georgia. It took us about 13-14 hours, but we finally arrived at 1:23 pm having driven the entire night, exhausted but still eager to see what is in Georgia. When we stepped out of the car for the first time, we were welcomed by a brisk December afternoon with a light breeze, something completely different from the sweltering heat of the south that we were told about. After adjusting ourselves from sitting for so long, we went and started trying to get everything settled. Once everything was settled, we started our first day of school.…

John Hughes wrote and directed the cult-like movie which is set in the 1980s called the Breakfast Club. The movie is about high school students that all do something wrong during school and end up in a day-long Saturday detention with an extremely strict principal that has them work towards a single goal. Throughout the movie the interaction among the different characters is very interesting and eye opening about how people can learn to get along and to communicate, The diversity of the group, variations between and among people, is easy to recognize as it consists of Claire who is the popular school princess, Andrew the big school jock, John Bender the bad boy, Brian the brainiac, and Allison the school outcast and basket case. The group seems to be in culture shock, the psychological discomfort of adjusting to a new cultural situation, at the start of the day since the five students are pretty much strangers to each other.…

Willy Loman: A Martyr of the Middle Class For many decades now, the American middle class has been subject to great self-delusion and failure. Stuck in a social construct not quite poor but far from wealthy, the suburban class tends to search for high risks with high rewards. Furthermore, it is constantly pressured by the materialistic extravagance of the affluent class, tempted to don superficial luxuries to disguise its lack of prosperity. This yearning to bridge the gap between lavishness and mediocrity tends to lead to the middle class’s involuntary dissociation from reality.…
