The exhibit tells me a lot about the background of Viki, one of the basket makers in the United States or specifically in Indiana. Besides that, the exhibit also tells me a lot about the process of making baskets. The process might be difficult for someone who is not familiar to basket making. There are three essential tools that are needed to make baskets and the tools are spitzka, pruning shears and pocketknife. All of these tools are required to shape and bend the willow to become a perfect basket. There are willows of different colors and the choosing of the colors of the willow determines the color of the basket at the end. By looking at the baskets shown in the exhibit, it looks like it need to be a lot of practice and creativity to make a beautiful basket. It also needs passion, determination and effort to retain the traditional ways of making baskets and also try to add some variance to the baskets so that the design of the basket is not too outdated. In the book “The Naked Roommate” by Harlan Cohen there are five tips that I could take out and apply to my life about my own health. The first of the five tips is “Freshman 15, or um 45”, I can apply this to my life because it applies to my weight. Being able to control my eating at my house where there aren't multiple fast food restaurants and an all you can eat buffet at Larson's commons was a lot easier than college. It can be hard to control myself from the temptations, but when I notice myself gaining weight it makes it a lot easier to want to go exercise and eat healthy. The second tip that can apply to me is “The student body image”, because body image is something that is very important to me.…

The other piece of artwork named “Drifter” was interesting, by the artist Jim Drain. This artist made a freestanding abstract sculpture from a wide range of fiber material, wood and steel. This piece was interesting with not all about the material, shape and colors, but the statement the artist made. Jim Drain had made use of a wide range of textile materials, taking chaos and creating something, in his words, “ephemeral and magical”.…

The body of the bag has elaborate hand-stitched bead embroidery, while the back rectangle that would represent the opening is also decorated with a band of beadwork. The next object is the Painted elk hide, created by Cadzi Cody who was a member of the Eastern Shoshone tribe. Ever since a young age I have been fascinated with the Native American art work that I have seen both in person and online. After traveling out west in Arizona and California and seeing some of the historic artwork that the Native Americans produced years ago, really gave me a sense on the traditions and time that went into each and every piece. One of the more particular pieces of work I am going to focus on is Native American Indian Beadwork. Since the beginning of time Native American Indians decorated their garments with colorful beaded designs that would represent a particular aspect of their culture or belief. They would use materials such as bone, shell, or dried berries to craft these beads into necklaces or decorations for the fringes…

Every kid wants to experiment when they are younger. Some of us just seem to make a massive mess when we do it. When most people think of quilts, they think of them as every-day household objects that serve a simple purpose. They do not think of them as intricate pieces of art that can communicate the deep personal expressions of an artist. In the exhibition titled 40 years of Color, Light, and Motion, located at the University of Mississippi Museum on University Ave. and Fifth Street, the quilts masterfully crafted by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry display the latter. The many quilts on display in the exhibition highlight Fallert-Gentry’s expert use of color, texture, and motion that she used to express herself through the art of quilt making.…

The concept of tradition and the was tradition is preserved comes into play among many other communities of potters. Tradition can be seen as a set of limitations on a potter or an opportunity for a manifestation of communal artistry. If one of the key characteristics defining an artist, is their agency over their creative decisions and a tradition that sets a guideline for how their pots should be made their agency could be said to be removed from the equation. Jon Muller argues that tradition and style are not necessarily limiting factors and that, mathematically speaking, there are infinite ways that style can manifest under set restrictions or guidelines of culture. Other scholars have argued the opposite.…
